Our up-to-date ranking of the best phones with a fingerprint sensor in the UK for 2026, refreshed daily with contract, SIM-free and pay-monthly deals. Whether you want a sleek under-display reader or a fast physical side-mounted button, this page compares every handset in our database that supports fingerprint unlock.

Leading the line-up are the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra with Qualcomm's 3D Sonic Gen 2 ultrasonic sensor, the OnePlus 13 Pro with a large-area optical reader, the Google Pixel 10 Pro with its second-generation optical sensor, and a wide range of mid-range Honor, Xiaomi, Motorola and Nothing handsets.

Compare today's contract deals from Vodafone, EE, O2, Three, Sky Mobile and iD Mobile, buy SIM-free outright, or sort by upfront cost, monthly price and contract length using the filters above.

Fingerprint sensors explained: types, speed and security

Fingerprint sensors come in three main flavours in 2026, and the type fitted to your phone affects unlock speed, reliability with wet or dirty fingers, and even how secure the reader is against spoofing. Knowing which is which makes choosing a handset easier.

Under-display optical sensors are the most common type on Android phones. A tiny camera sits beneath the OLED panel and takes a high-contrast photograph of your fingerprint when you press the highlighted area. The display briefly flashes bright white to illuminate the ridges. OnePlus, Google Pixel, Honor, Xiaomi, Motorola, Nothing and most Realme and Oppo handsets use optical sensors.

Under-display ultrasonic sensors are exclusive to Samsung Galaxy S and Z series flagships. Qualcomm's 3D Sonic Gen 2 emits high-frequency sound waves through the display glass and measures the echo bouncing off the ridges of your fingerprint. Because it builds a true 3D map rather than a 2D photograph, ultrasonic readers work better with damp or oily fingers, are harder to fool with a printed fake, and don't need the screen to flash.

Physical side-mounted fingerprint sensors are built into the power button. Sony, many Samsung Galaxy A models, the Google Pixel 9a and several Motorola phones use this approach. They are extremely fast, work regardless of screen state and function well with wet fingers because the contact area is small and self-clears. Rear-mounted sensors are now rare but still appear on budget Motorola, Nokia HMD and Honor X-series phones.

Apple iPhones do not have fingerprint sensors in 2026. The iPhone 17, 17 Pro, 17 Pro Max and 17 Air all rely on Face ID. Touch ID was last seen on the third-generation iPhone SE (2022) and Apple has consistently chosen Face ID since.

On speed, ultrasonic and side-mounted sensors unlock in around 0.2 seconds and optical readers are close behind at 0.25-0.3 seconds. Wet-finger reliability is where they diverge most: ultrasonic and side-mounted sensors cope well, while optical readers struggle because water droplets diffract the illumination flash.

All three sensor types meet the FIDO Alliance Level 2 requirements used by UK banking apps including Barclays, HSBC, Lloyds, NatWest, Monzo, Starling and Revolut, with false-acceptance rates typically around one in 50,000.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which is better: fingerprint or Face ID?
Both are highly secure for everyday use - the right answer depends on context. Face ID (iPhone only) works in the dark and is more resistant to high-quality spoofing thanks to its 3D depth map. Fingerprint sensors work when you're wearing a mask, sunglasses or a motorcycle helmet, unlock the phone while it's flat on a desk and feel quicker for one-handed use. Most Android flagships also offer face unlock as a secondary option, though it isn't rated for banking apps.
Do iPhones have fingerprint sensors in 2026?
No. The entire iPhone 17 family (iPhone 17, 17 Pro, 17 Pro Max and 17 Air) uses Face ID only. The last iPhone with Touch ID was the third-generation iPhone SE released in 2022, which is no longer sold. If fingerprint unlock is essential, you'll need to look at Android - Samsung, OnePlus, Google Pixel, Honor, Xiaomi, Nothing and Motorola all include fingerprint sensors across their 2026 ranges.
What's the difference between optical and ultrasonic fingerprint sensors?
Optical sensors take a 2D photograph of your fingerprint by flashing the display white and reading the reflection. They are fitted to most Android phones including OnePlus, Pixel, Honor and Xiaomi. Ultrasonic sensors (exclusive to Samsung Galaxy S and Z series flagships) use high-frequency sound waves to build a 3D map of your fingerprint ridges. Ultrasonic is faster, works better with wet or oily fingers and is harder to fool with a printed fake.
Which phone has the most accurate fingerprint sensor?
The Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra leads on raw accuracy and wet-finger reliability thanks to Qualcomm's 3D Sonic Gen 2 ultrasonic reader. The OnePlus 13 Pro is a close second with its large-area optical sensor that captures more of the fingerprint per press. Side-mounted readers on Sony Xperia and Google Pixel 9a are also extremely accurate because the small, recessed contact area resists water and dirt.
Why doesn't my fingerprint sensor work when wet?
Optical under-display sensors rely on a brief screen flash to photograph your fingerprint, and water droplets refract that light and confuse the camera, so unlocks fail until your finger and the screen are dry. Ultrasonic sensors (Samsung flagships) and side-mounted readers handle wet fingers much better because they read the ridges directly. If you regularly unlock with damp hands, prioritise a Galaxy S26 series phone or one with a side-mounted button.
Can fingerprints be hacked?
Modern phone fingerprint sensors are very difficult to spoof. Ultrasonic sensors build a 3D map that defeats most printed and silicone fakes. Optical sensors have been fooled in lab conditions, but pulling that off in the real world requires a clear lifted print, specialist materials and physical access to the phone. For everyday use - including UK banking apps and Google Pay - fingerprint unlock is rated secure by the FIDO Alliance and accepted by every major UK bank.
Which Samsung phones have fingerprint sensors?
Every current Samsung Galaxy smartphone has a fingerprint sensor. The Galaxy S26, S26+ and S26 Ultra flagships use Qualcomm 3D Sonic Gen 2 ultrasonic under-display readers. The Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Z Flip 7 foldables use side-mounted sensors in the power button. Galaxy A-series mid-rangers (A56, A36, A26) use a mix of optical under-display and side-mounted sensors depending on the model.
Do all Android phones have fingerprint sensors?
Almost all do. Every Android flagship and mid-ranger from Samsung, OnePlus, Google, Honor, Xiaomi, Motorola, Nothing, Sony, Oppo and Realme sold in the UK in 2026 includes a fingerprint sensor. The handful of exceptions are ultra-budget sub-£100 handsets and a few rugged devices. If a phone is on this page, it has a fingerprint sensor.
