Our complete guide to eSIM in the UK for 2026, updated daily with eSIM-ready handset deals and SIM-only plans from every major network. An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a small chip soldered into your phone that downloads your network profile over the air, replacing the plastic SIM card you used to slot in. No tray, no waiting for a card in the post, and you can switch networks in minutes.

Every major UK network now supports eSIM: EE, O2, Vodafone and Three across pay-monthly, SIM-only and pay-as-you-go, plus giffgaff, Sky Mobile, Tesco Mobile, iD Mobile, VOXI and Smarty on the MVNO side, with Lebara finally joining the list in late 2025. The phones support it too - every iPhone from the XS onwards, all current iPhone 17 models, the Samsung Galaxy S20 series and newer, the entire Pixel 4 to Pixel 10 line and most flagship Honor, OPPO and Sony handsets.

Compare today's deals below, or scroll down for our plain-English explainer covering activation, dual SIM and transfers between phones.

What is eSIM and why does it matter in 2026?

An eSIM is a programmable chip built into the phone. Instead of inserting a plastic SIM, you scan a QR code or use your network's app and the phone downloads your number, plan and credentials over the air. The chip is rewritable, so you can store multiple network profiles and switch between them without opening a tool tray or visiting a shop.

UK adoption has accelerated. All four mobile network operators - EE, O2, Vodafone and Three - have offered eSIM for several years, and the MVNOs followed in waves. giffgaff added eSIM in 2022, VOXI in late 2024, Smarty in September 2025 and Lebara in October 2025. By mid-2026 every mainstream UK network supports eSIM on pay-monthly, and most also support it on pay-as-you-go.

On the handset side, eSIM is now standard. Every iPhone from the XS onwards supports it, including the entire iPhone 17 line (17, 17 Plus, 17 Pro, 17 Pro Max and the eSIM-only iPhone Air). Samsung covers it from the Galaxy S20 upwards, including the S26 and S26 Ultra, which support a physical SIM plus eSIM or dual eSIM. Every Google Pixel from Pixel 4 onwards is eSIM-ready, and you'll find it on flagship Honor Magic, OPPO Find, Sony Xperia and Motorola Edge handsets too.

Dual SIM is the killer feature for most UK buyers. Almost every eSIM phone supports one active eSIM alongside a physical SIM (or a second eSIM), which lets you run a UK contract on one number and a cheap travel data eSIM on the other - useful for business users keeping work and personal numbers on one device, and travellers who buy a Holafly, Airalo or Saily eSIM on landing while keeping their UK number live.

UK iPhones still have a physical SIM slot in 2026. Apple went eSIM-only on US iPhone 14 models in 2022 and has expanded the eSIM-only sales region since, but UK iPhone 17, 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max still ship with a nano-SIM tray alongside eSIM support. The exception is the iPhone 17 Air, which is eSIM-only worldwide, including in the UK.

Ready to switch? Use the filters above to compare eSIM-compatible handsets on contract from EE, Vodafone, O2, Three and the major MVNOs, or browse SIM-only deals for a cheaper monthly plan you can activate in minutes.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is eSIM and how does it differ from a physical SIM?
An eSIM is a small rewritable chip built into your phone that downloads your network profile over the air, usually by scanning a QR code. A physical SIM is a plastic card you insert into a tray. Functionally they do the same job - identify you to the network and carry your number - but eSIM activation takes minutes rather than days, you can store multiple profiles on one device, and there's no tray to break or lose.
Does my phone support eSIM?
Probably, if it's flagship and recent. On Apple, every iPhone from the XS (2018) onwards supports eSIM, including all iPhone 17 models. On Samsung, the Galaxy S20 series and newer support it, plus the Z Fold and Z Flip foldables. Every Google Pixel from the Pixel 4 onwards is eSIM-ready. You'll also find it on the Honor Magic series, Sony Xperia, OPPO Find X, and Motorola Edge and Razr. Older Android mid-rangers often don't - check the spec sheet for "eSIM" before buying.
Which UK networks offer eSIM?
All four UK mobile network operators support eSIM: EE, O2, Vodafone and Three. On the MVNO side, giffgaff, Sky Mobile, Tesco Mobile, iD Mobile, VOXI and Smarty all support it (Smarty added eSIM in September 2025). Lebara was the last major holdout and switched eSIM on in October 2025, initially for new iPhone Air customers with rollout to other handsets continuing through 2026. Tesco Mobile requires you to phone or visit a store rather than activate online.
How do I switch to eSIM?
If you're a new customer, choose eSIM at checkout - the network sends you a QR code by email, you scan it in your phone's settings, and the profile installs in a couple of minutes. If you already have a physical SIM, open your network's app and look for "Switch to eSIM", "Replace my SIM" or "Convert to eSIM". On giffgaff that's Account > SIM > Replace my SIM > Switch to eSIM. EE, O2, Vodafone and Three offer similar in-app journeys. You'll need Wi-Fi and your phone unlocked.
Can I have eSIM and physical SIM at the same time?
Yes, on almost every dual-SIM eSIM phone. UK iPhones (XS through 17 Pro Max) support one nano-SIM plus one eSIM, or up to eight stored eSIMs with two active at once. Samsung Galaxy S20 and newer support nano-SIM plus eSIM or dual eSIM, and Google Pixel 7 and newer support dual eSIM. Keep your UK contract on the physical SIM and add a cheap travel eSIM (Holafly, Airalo, Saily) when you go abroad, or run separate work and personal numbers on the same phone.
Is eSIM safer than a physical SIM?
Broadly yes. A physical SIM can be popped out of a lost or stolen phone in seconds and inserted into another handset to receive your 2FA codes. An eSIM is locked to the device, so a thief can't extract it. SIM-swap fraud (a scammer convincing your network to transfer your number to their device) is still possible, but networks generally require more identity verification to issue an eSIM than to post a replacement physical SIM. Set an account PIN with your network for extra protection.
Can I transfer eSIM between phones?
Yes. Apple's eSIM Quick Transfer moves an eSIM from an old iPhone to a new one during setup with no QR code needed, and Samsung and Google have similar transfer flows. If automatic transfer doesn't work, contact your network and they'll deactivate the old eSIM and issue a fresh QR code, usually within minutes. Don't factory-reset the old phone before the transfer is confirmed.
Is eSIM free or does it cost extra?
It's free on every UK network. There's no premium for choosing eSIM over a physical SIM at checkout, and switching from physical to eSIM mid-contract is free on EE, O2, Vodafone, Three, giffgaff, Sky Mobile, iD Mobile, VOXI, Smarty and Lebara. You'll still pay your normal monthly plan or PAYG top-up, and travel eSIMs from third-party providers like Holafly or Airalo are priced per data bundle separately from your UK plan.
