Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Zero upfront cost on every device with the first monthly payment taken around fourteen days after dispatch, removing the deposit barrier of a traditional contract
  • Lifetime warranty for the duration of the subscription covers manufacturing defects and component failure on both new and refurbished devices at no extra cost
  • Free return at the end of the minimum 12, 24 or 36-month term means no resale hassle and no ownership liability when newer models arrive
  • Refurbished tier from £3.95 a month for watches and from roughly £15 a month for older flagship phones gives access to premium hardware at materially lower monthly cost than new
  • FCA-regulated consumer hire agreement with B Corp certification and a clear circular-economy model where devices cycle through multiple users over their lifespan

Cons

  • The customer never owns the device, so total payments over a 24 or 36-month lease frequently exceed the cash price of buying outright and pairing with a SIM-only deal
  • Mid-contract cancellation outside the 14-day cooling-off window is expensive, with the early termination fee capped at up to 18 times the monthly subscription depending on payments made and remaining
  • A hard credit search is recorded on your file once the soft pre-approval check converts to an active subscription, which can affect future borrowing applications
  • No bundled airtime or SIM included, so customers still need a separate SIM-only plan from a network of their choice to use the phone

Overview

Raylo is a London-based technology subscription service that leases phones, tablets, smartwatches, laptops and other consumer electronics on fixed monthly terms. The company was incorporated in September 2018 (originally as Xylofi Limited, renamed in March 2019) and trades from 5 New Street Square in the City of London under Raylo Group Limited. It is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority for consumer hire agreements (FCA reference 841488) and is a certified B Corporation.

Raylo's product is a pure lease, not a finance agreement. Customers pay zero upfront and a fixed monthly fee for 12, 24 or 36 months, with the first payment taken roughly 14 days after dispatch. At the end of the minimum term the device can be returned for free, kept on a rolling monthly subscription, or swapped for a newer model on a fresh term. The customer never owns the device. Both new and refurbished stock are offered, with refurbished tiers (Pristine, Excellent, Good) typically running 25 to 40 percent cheaper than new on the same handset.

The company has raised over £180 million in cumulative equity and debt funding from investors including Macquarie, Channel 4 Ventures, Octopus Ventures, Telefonica, NatWest, Quilam Capital and Citi. As of early 2026 Raylo reports around 100,000 active subscribers and roughly 100 employees, with a US launch planned for the second half of 2026. The platform also powers Raylo Pay, an embedded subscription checkout used by partner brands including PlayStation Direct.

Cashback & Offers

Raylo runs a flat-rate new-customer cashback offer through Quidco, typically around £40 paid after the second successful monthly subscription payment. Promotional discount codes for the first month or first three months also appear regularly on voucher sites and in Raylo's own email signup flow. Raylo is not currently listed as a tracked merchant on TopCashback.

Our Verdict

Raylo's core proposition is genuinely different from anything offered by network operators or independent resellers in the UK market. By separating the device from the airtime and pricing it as a pure lease, the company gives customers access to current-generation flagships with zero upfront cost, a lifetime warranty for the life of the subscription, and a free return at the end of the term. The 4.5 out of 5 Trustpilot rating across more than 23,000 reviews and FCA regulation as a consumer hire provider underpin a credible operational track record.

The trade-off is total cost. A 36-month lease on a flagship iPhone or Samsung will typically end up several hundred pounds more than buying the same phone outright on a 0 percent finance plan and pairing it with a low-cost SIM-only deal, because the customer is paying for the convenience of returning the device and avoiding resale. The 14-day cooling-off window is generous, but cancelling later in the term is expensive with the early termination fee capped at up to 18 times the monthly payment.

Raylo works best for buyers who actively want to upgrade to the latest model every one to three years and would otherwise be stuck trying to sell or trade in a depreciating handset. For customers who keep phones for four or more years or are happy with a mid-range device, outright purchase plus SIM-only remains the cheaper route. The refurbished tier substantially closes that gap and is the most cost-effective way to use the platform.
