About the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8
The Galaxy Z Fold8 is not the phone the Fold7 turned into. It is a new shape entirely, and the one worth understanding before you buy. Instead of a tall, narrow phone that opens into a near-square tablet, this is a short, wide, passport-shaped handset that opens sideways into a 7.6-inch display in a 4:3 ratio. That sounds like a small change and is not. Films play with far less letterboxing, PDFs and web pages hold a sensible column width, and the 5.5-inch cover screen is broad enough to type on with two thumbs instead of the sliver you get on a conventional Fold. At 201g it is the lightest Fold Samsung has built, and charging finally moves to 45W, filling roughly two thirds of the 4,800mAh battery in half an hour. The compromises are real: there is no telephoto lens, and the redesigned hinge no longer holds itself open at an angle, so tabletop selfies and propped-up video calls are out. It is aimed at people who want a foldable for reading and watching, not for photography.

It is worth buying if the wide shape appeals to you specifically. The 4:3 inner screen is better for video, ebooks and documents than any previous Fold, and the 5.5-inch cover display is usable one-handed in a way tall foldables are not. If you want the best foldable camera or a tabletop mode, the Z Fold8 Ultra is the model to look at instead.
What is the difference between the Galaxy Z Fold8 and the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra?
They are different shapes, not different tiers of the same phone. The Fold8 is short and wide with a 7.6-inch 4:3 inner screen and two cameras, while the Fold8 Ultra keeps the traditional tall bookfold layout with an 8-inch inner screen, a 200MP main camera and a 3x telephoto. Both use the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 and charge at 45W.
Does the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 have a telephoto camera?
No. It uses a 50MP main camera with optical stabilisation and a 50MP ultrawide, and handles moderate zoom by cropping into the main sensor. If you regularly shoot distant subjects, the Z Fold8 Ultra's dedicated 3x telephoto is the reason to spend more.
Does the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 support Flex Mode?
No. The reworked hinge does not hold intermediate angles, so the phone will not stand half-open on a table for hands-free video calls or self-timer shots. Tent mode still works for propping the phone up to watch something, but tabletop Flex Mode has gone.
Is the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 waterproof?
It has an IP48 rating, meaning it withstands immersion in 1.5 metres of fresh water for up to 30 minutes but is only protected against solid particles larger than 1mm. Rain and spills are fine, but the hinge is not sealed against fine dust or sand, so keep it away from beaches.
How long will the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 receive updates?
Samsung guarantees seven major Android upgrades and seven years of security updates. It launches on Android 17 with One UI 9, which puts supported software into 2033. That is the longest commitment available on any Android foldable.
