iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max: UK Release Date, Price and Everything We Know

Apple is expected to put the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max on sale on Friday 18 September 2026, following a keynote ten days earlier. This is the year the iPhone line splits in two: the Pro models and Apple's first foldable arrive in September, while the standard iPhone 18 moves to spring 2027. The headline changes are a 2nm A20 Pro chip, a variable aperture on the main camera, and a price rise that looks increasingly hard for Apple to avoid.

When is the iPhone 18 Pro out?

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, who has the strongest track record on Apple's internal calendar, points to a keynote on Tuesday 8 September with the Pro models reaching shops on Friday 18 September. That follows Apple's usual rhythm exactly: announce on a Tuesday, open pre-orders that Friday, ship the Friday after.

The split is the genuinely new thing here. For nine years every iPhone has launched in one September block. From 2026 Apple is expected to run two waves a year, with the Pro tier and the foldable in autumn and the standard and budget models in spring. If you were waiting for a regular iPhone 18, you are waiting until 2027.

How much will the iPhone 18 Pro cost in the UK?

This is where the interesting story is, and it has nothing to do with Apple's margins. Memory prices have surged. AppleInsider reports that 256GB of flash storage that cost Apple roughly $13 a couple of years ago now costs around $51, and the iPhone 18 Pro is also moving to 12GB of RAM on a 2nm chip that is itself more expensive to fabricate. Analysts quoted by PhoneArena and GSMArena expect a rise of $200 to $300 depending on the tier.

For UK buyers the arithmetic is unusually clean, because Apple priced the last generation at parity: the iPhone 17 Pro started at $1,099 in the US and £1,099 here when it launched on 19 September 2025.

Treat that right-hand column as our arithmetic rather than a leak. Nobody has leaked a UK price list, and Apple has absorbed component cost rises before rather than pass them on. But two things make a rise more likely than usual this year: the cost increase is driven by memory, which Apple buys rather than makes, and the 128GB tier is already gone, so there is no cheaper entry point left to hide behind.

What is actually new

The A20 Pro chip

The A20 Pro is expected to be Apple's first chip on TSMC's 2nm process, against 3nm for the A19 Pro. The estimates in circulation put it around 15% faster and roughly 30% more power-efficient. In practice the efficiency figure matters more than the speed one: the iPhone 17 Pro is already fast enough for anything most people do, and a 30% efficiency gain shows up as battery life rather than benchmark scores. The phones are also expected to move to Apple's own C2 modem.

A variable aperture on the main camera

The most interesting hardware change is a mechanical variable aperture on the 48MP main camera, similar in principle to a DSLR lens iris. Today an iPhone lens has one fixed aperture and every depth-of-field effect is computed in software. A physical iris would let the camera genuinely control how much light reaches the sensor and how shallow the focus falls, which is the sort of change that improves photos in ways a software update cannot replicate. The front camera is also tipped to jump to 24MP.

A smaller Dynamic Island, but not under-display Face ID

Reports have gone back and forth on this one, so it is worth being precise. The current consensus is that the Face ID flood illuminator moves beneath the display, which shrinks the Dynamic Island but does not eliminate it. Full under-display Face ID, and with it a genuinely uninterrupted screen, has reportedly slipped to 2027. If you have seen a render showing a completely clean display, it is speculative.

A thicker body

Leaked dimensions suggest the Pro models grow to roughly 10.75mm, close to 2mm thicker than the iPhone 17 Pro, with a more prominent camera plateau to house the variable aperture mechanism. The back glass is said to be redesigned so its colour matches the aluminium frame for a more unified look. Colour leaks point to Dark Cherry, Light Blue and Silver, with Dark Gray appearing in earlier reports and dropping out of later ones.

iPhone 18 Pro vs iPhone 18 Pro Max

Unusually, the two models look near-identical on paper this year apart from screen size and battery. The Pro Max's battery is the one to note: reports suggest the eSIM-only version reaches around 5,425mAh where the physical-SIM version tops out near 5,235mAh, because the SIM tray takes space the battery would otherwise use. The UK has been eSIM-friendly for years, so British buyers may well get the larger cell.

Should you wait, or buy an iPhone 17 Pro now?

With eight weeks to go, waiting is the sensible default if you want the newest phone. But the more useful question is what happens to the outgoing model, and here we can use our own live pricing rather than speculation.

Right now we track 11,965 iPhone 17 Pro deals across UK retailers. The cheapest new SIM-free price is £1,049, already £50 below the September 2025 launch RRP, and the cheapest contract with nothing to pay upfront is £43.10 a month over 36 months. The iPhone 17 Pro Max sits at £1,129 SIM-free.

The pattern worth planning around is this: new iPhones do not discount in their first two months, but the model they replace does. The steepest falls on the iPhone 17 Pro will come in the two to three weeks after the iPhone 18 Pro reaches shops, with a second round at Black Friday. If you want a Pro-class iPhone and do not need the newest one, late September is the moment to buy, not now and not launch day.

One caveat specific to this year: if the memory-driven price rise does land, the iPhone 17 Pro may hold its value better than an outgoing flagship normally would, simply because its replacement costs £200 more. A smaller gap between old and new means less pressure to discount.

What we still do not know

• UK pricing. Nothing has leaked. The table above is our arithmetic from reported US increases, not a source.
• Whether the iPhone Fold ships alongside the Pro models. September and December have both been reported.
• Telephoto specifics. The variable aperture reporting concerns the main camera. What happens to the telephoto and ultrawide is unclear.
• Final colour names. Colour leaks are among the least reliable pre-launch claims and routinely change in the last month.
• Charging speeds. No credible leak so far.
