Is Sky Mobile down? How to check Sky Mobile network status

The quickest way to confirm a Sky Mobile outage is Sky's own mobile network checker at sky.com/help/servicestatus/mobile, which needs no sign-in. Sky Mobile runs on O2's network, so check the O2 status page too. If either lists a fault, use WiFi Calling and ask Sky for text updates. If not, restart your phone and toggle airplane mode.

Check the official network status

Sky's mobile network checker opens without signing in. You tell it what you're having trouble with and where you are, and it shows planned maintenance and known problems with the Sky Mobile network in your area. If there's a problem, you can ask for text updates and Sky will tell you when it's fixed. Sky says the checker doesn't work with screen readers. The same page shows trending threads from the Sky Community forum and links to Sky's coverage checker, which shows expected coverage rather than live faults.

Is it Sky Mobile or your phone?

  1. Check Sky's mobile network checker at sky.com/help/servicestatus/mobile. If Sky lists a problem nearby, it is a network fault, so ask for text updates and wait for the fix.
  2. Check the O2 status page. Sky Mobile uses Virgin Media O2's network, so a fault on O2's masts usually hits Sky Mobile customers too, and O2's own checker at status.o2.co.uk shows faults at local masts.
  3. Ask someone nearby on O2, giffgaff or Tesco Mobile, which use the same masts. If theirs work and yours doesn't, the fault may be in Sky's own systems (as in May 2023 and April 2024) or in your phone, SIM or account.
  4. Restart your phone, make sure airplane mode is off and update its software. Sky also says to check the SIM is the right size and fitted correctly.
  5. Try your SIM in another phone, or another Sky Mobile SIM in yours. "SIM not supported" means the phone may need unlocking, and a new or replacement SIM has to be activated in My Sky first.
  6. If you have WiFi, use WiFi Calling while you wait. Downdetector (downdetector.co.uk/status/sky/) shows whether other people are reporting Sky problems, but it mixes broadband, TV and mobile reports and they are user reports, not Sky data.

Outage, or weak signal where you are?

If Sky Mobile's checker shows no known problem, check how strong its signal should be at your postcode. This uses Ofcom's coverage data, not live status.

Try:

Sky Mobile runs on O2

Sky Mobile has no masts of its own. It uses O2's network, so a O2 outage usually affects Sky Mobile and these other brands too.

Sky Mobile not working? Fixes to try

No signal or SOS only

Your phone cannot connect to Sky Mobile. Check Sky's network checker and the O2 status page, then restart the phone, make sure airplane mode is off and update the software. Reseat the SIM and check it is the right size. Sky's Device Support guides show how to choose the network manually on your model.

Mobile data not working

Sky says you need a 4G or 5G compatible phone for mobile data. The easiest fix is in My Sky: Manage SIM, Network and controls, Request network settings (the Android install PIN is 1111). To set it by hand, Sky's guides give name Sky Mobile Internet, APN mobile.sky, no username or password, MCC 234, MNC 57, APN type default.

Calls and texts work but data doesn't on an older phone

Virgin Media O2, whose network Sky Mobile uses, switched off 3G region by region through 2025. A 3G-only phone keeps calls and texts over 2G but loses mobile data. Sky says that if you're affected and don't want to upgrade your phone, you have the right to leave your contract.

Weak signal indoors

Use WiFi Calling or 4G Calling, which both need a compatible phone. Sky warns that phones not bought from Sky may not support WiFi Calling, and it only works in the UK. For 999, Sky tries the mobile network first; over WiFi Calling the emergency services can't find your location automatically, so tell them where you are.

Phone stuck on the wrong network

Use manual network selection to pick the right network, following Sky's Device Support guide for your phone, then switch back to automatic once it connects. Sky's guides also show how to change the network connection mode, so the phone can use 4G and 5G.

Nothing works after all the steps

Reset network settings using Sky's Device Support guide for your phone (this forgets saved WiFi networks). If Sky's checker shows no fault and the SIM fails in another phone too, contact Sky on 03442 41 41 41, which Sky says is free for Sky Mobile customers.

Past Sky Mobile outages

  • 11 June 2026

The BBC reported that a damaged O2 mast at Wyke, West Yorkshire had left people in the Northowram area without reliable signal for 11 weeks before it was fixed. Sky customers were affected alongside O2, Vodafone, Tesco, Lebara and Asda Mobile users, and residents were asked to claim compensation from their own providers.

    BBC News
  • 13 January 2025

An O2 mast upgrade in Esh Winning, County Durham ran into technical problems and left residents with little or no signal for about a month. The BBC reported that the O2 fault hit Sky and Tesco Mobile customers too, and one resident on Sky said her children's schools had no way to reach her.

    BBC News
  • 11 April 2024

Sky Mobile calls and data on 3G, 4G and 5G failed from about 4:30pm. Sky said it was fixed that evening, but data problems carried on until Sky called the network stable on 13 April. O2's other MVNO partners had no big problems, so the fault looked specific to Sky.

  • 30 June 2023

From late morning, Sky Mobile and giffgaff customers, both on O2's network, could not make or receive calls and texts, with around 1,000 Downdetector reports for each. Sky said it was working to fix the problem as soon as possible.

    BBC News
  • 16 May 2023

From around 2pm, Sky Mobile customers lost mobile internet and calls, with thousands of Downdetector reports. Virgin Media O2 said the issue was affecting Sky Mobile services only and its own network was working as usual, so this was a fault in Sky's systems rather than O2's masts.

Can you get compensation for a Sky Mobile outage?

Ofcom's automatic compensation scheme covers landline and broadband only, and Sky's own automatic compensation applies to Sky Broadband and Talk, so a Sky Mobile outage does not trigger an automatic payment. Sky Mobile's contract says that if outages or poor service on its network persist and Sky can't fix them, you can leave without early termination charges on 31 days' notice, and you may be entitled to a service credit assessed case by case. You have to report the fault and give Sky a reasonable chance to fix it first.

Fed up with Sky Mobile outages?

Switching to a brand on the same network will not help during an outage, because it uses the same masts. A SIM on a different network will. You keep your number by texting PAC to 65075.

Sky Mobile outage FAQs

Is there a problem with Sky Mobile today?
We can't tell you live. The official answer is Sky's mobile network checker at sky.com/help/servicestatus/mobile, which shows known problems and planned work where you are. Because Sky Mobile runs on O2's network, also check O2's status checker at status.o2.co.uk. Downdetector shows whether other people are reporting Sky problems.
Why does my phone say SOS or No service on Sky Mobile?
Your phone cannot connect to the network. The cause may be a fault at your local O2 mast, a fault in Sky's own systems, weak signal indoors, or a problem with your phone, SIM or account. Check Sky's checker and the O2 status page, then restart, check airplane mode is off and try the SIM in another phone.
If O2 is down, is Sky Mobile down too?
Usually, yes. Sky Mobile uses Virgin Media O2's network, so an O2 mast or network fault normally affects Sky Mobile, giffgaff and Tesco Mobile as well, as on 30 June 2023. The reverse is not always true: in May 2023 and April 2024 Sky Mobile went down on its own while O2 and its other partners worked normally.
Can I contact Sky on X during an outage?
No. Sky's @SkyHelpTeam account on X says it is no longer monitored for service queries and its team can't reply there. Use Sky's network checker, sign up for text updates if it shows a fault, and contact Sky through sky.com/help or on 03442 41 41 41 if the problem is only on your line.
Will Sky compensate me for a Sky Mobile outage?
Not automatically. Ofcom's automatic compensation scheme only covers landline and broadband, and Sky's automatic payments apply to Sky Broadband and Talk. Sky Mobile's contract says you may get a service credit, assessed case by case, if a network fault persists and Sky can't fix it, and you can then leave without early termination charges on 31 days' notice.
How long do Sky Mobile outages usually last?
National outages have lasted hours to a couple of days. The April 2024 fault started in the afternoon of 11 April and data problems ran until 13 April. Local O2 mast faults can last much longer: about a month in Esh Winning in 2025 and 11 weeks near Halifax in 2026.
Can I call 999 if Sky Mobile is down?
Usually, yes. Ofcom says that when a mobile network is down, a phone should be able to roam onto another network to make an emergency call, though not where no network has coverage. Sky says you can call 999 over WiFi Calling if there's no signal, but the emergency services won't get your location automatically, so tell them where you are.
