O2, operated by Telefónica UK, is one of the UK's four major network operators. O2 provides coverage to several popular MVNOs including giffgaff, Sky Mobile, Tesco Mobile, and Lycamobile.
About O2 Coverage
O2 has a long history in the UK mobile market, originally launching as Cellnet in 1985 before becoming O2 in 2002. Now owned by Virgin Media O2, the network covers around 99% of the UK population with 4G outdoors.
O2 is the parent network for more MVNOs than any other UK operator. giffgaff, Sky Mobile, Tesco Mobile, and Lycamobile all run on O2's infrastructure, meaning their coverage is identical to O2's own service.
O2's indoor coverage is generally strong in urban areas. The network supports WiFi calling and VoLTE (Voice over LTE) which can improve call quality and indoor connectivity. O2 also offers a network guarantee - if coverage isn't good enough, they'll let you leave within 30 days.
O2 launched 5G in October 2019 and continues to expand. Their 5G service is available in over 200 towns and cities. The merger with Virgin Media has provided additional infrastructure investment for continued network improvements.
