Is EE down? How to check EE network status

The quickest way to confirm an EE outage is EE's own service status checker: log in at ee.co.uk/help/service-status, or text NETWORK STATUS to 150. If EE lists a problem in your area, switch on Wi-Fi Calling and wait for the fix. If it lists nothing, restart your phone and toggle airplane mode before calling 150.

Check EE's official service status

EE's service status checker asks you to log in to your EE account rather than type in a postcode. Once you are logged in, EE checks your area for all your EE products, including planned works, and can alert you to mobile network problems. Without logging in, you can text NETWORK STATUS to 150 to check for a problem with your mobile service. EE also lets you save up to 5 important places and sends alerts when the network is down there, when it is being improved and when it should be fixed. The public postcode tool at ee.co.uk/help/mobile-coverage-checker shows expected coverage, not live faults.

Is it EE or your phone?

  1. Check EE's service status: log in at ee.co.uk/help/service-status, or text NETWORK STATUS to 150. If EE lists a problem in your area, it is a network fault and there is nothing to fix on your phone.
  2. Ask someone nearby on EE, or on a network that runs on EE such as BT Mobile, whether their phone works. If theirs is fine and yours is not, the problem is more likely your phone, SIM or account.
  3. Turn airplane mode on, wait a few seconds and turn it off, then restart your phone. EE lists both as the first fixes for signal problems.
  4. Update your phone's software and, if only data is failing, check that mobile data is switched on.
  5. Try your SIM in another phone, or another EE SIM in yours, to rule out a faulty SIM. EE says physical SIMs activated before October 2012 need replacing after its 3G switch-off.
  6. If you have Wi-Fi, turn on Wi-Fi Calling so you can still call and text while the mobile network is down. Downdetector (downdetector.co.uk/status/ee-everything-everywhere/) shows whether other people are reporting EE problems, but those are user reports, not EE data.

Outage, or weak signal where you are?

If EE's checker shows no known problem, check how strong its signal should be at your postcode. This uses Ofcom's coverage data, not live status.

Try:

Other brands on the EE network

These providers use EE's masts, so a EE network outage usually affects their customers too.

EE not working? Fixes to try

No signal or SOS only

SOS or "Emergency calls only" means your phone cannot connect to EE. Turn airplane mode on and off, then restart. If EE's service status shows no problem where you are, update your software and try the SIM in another phone. EE's list of common causes includes thick walls, older devices, busy masts, distance from the mast, tree cover and weather.

Mobile data not working

EE's device guides check three things in order: that you can make a voice call (if not, fix that first), that mobile data is switched on, and that the APN is set to everywhere with username eesecure and password secure. Abroad, data roaming must also be on. Phones supplied by EE already have the right APN, and EE manages iPhone APN settings itself, so you cannot change them on an iPhone.

Calls not working on an older phone

EE switched off its 3G network in January and February 2024, so calls on EE now need 4G Calling (also called VoLTE). It is free and works anywhere on EE's 4G network, but phones bought outside EE may not support it. Text HANDSET to 150 to check whether your phone is compatible.

Weak signal indoors

Turn on Wi-Fi Calling in your phone's settings (EE's device guides show where). Calls cost the same as normal calls and use no mobile data, about 10MB of Wi-Fi for a 30-minute call. If you walk out of Wi-Fi range, the call hands over to 4G Calling, and it drops if there is no 4G either.

Phone stuck on the wrong network

On Android, go to Settings > Connections > Mobile networks > Network operators and pick EE, or set it back to automatic. EE warns that a manually selected network drops when it goes out of reach, so return to automatic once you have tested it.

Picture messages will not send

Check the MMS access point: EE's device guides list the name EE MMS, APN eezone, username eesecure, password secure, proxy 149.254.201.135 and port 8080. Mobile data must be on for picture messages to send.

Past EE outages

  • 5 June 2026

BT and EE's websites, apps and online accounts failed from just after 10am. ISPreview reported that the mobile and broadband networks kept working. This was an app and website problem, not a network outage.

    ISPreview
  • 24 July 2025

A technical fault in voice services left thousands of EE and BT mobile and landline customers unable to make or receive calls, with over 2,500 Downdetector reports at 2pm. Some people could not get through to 999. BT said the fault was fixed that evening, and in December 2025 Ofcom opened an investigation into BT over the outage.

    BBC News
  • 26 March 2025

Some EE customers in southern England lost signal, calls and mobile internet. EE said service was restored in less than five minutes but did not give a cause.

    The Independent
  • 24 April 2024

EE customers in Fowey, Cornwall reported more than a week without phone signal after a local fault. The problem was local, not national.

    BBC News
  • 4 September 2023

From around midday, many EE and Vodafone customers could not call each other, and numbers that had moved away from EE were also hit. EE apologised and said some customers were unable to make or receive calls from a Vodafone number. The problems carried on into the next morning.

Can you get compensation for a EE outage?

Ofcom's automatic compensation scheme, which EE has signed up to, covers landline and broadband only, so an EE mobile outage does not trigger an automatic payment. EE's pay monthly terms say that if you report network disruption, EE may reduce your monthly charges by up to 100% for that period. The disruption must be severe, hit the parts of the network you use most, and leave you with no other way to use the service. Pay as you go customers may be entitled to a discount after reporting it, so call 150 to report the fault and ask.

Fed up with EE outages?

Switching to a brand on the same network will not help during an outage, because it uses the same masts. A SIM on a different network will. You keep your number by texting PAC to 65075.

EE outage FAQs

Is there a problem with the EE network today?
We can't tell you live. The only reliable answer comes from EE itself: log in to the service status checker at ee.co.uk/help/service-status, or text NETWORK STATUS to 150. EE's X account, @EE, posts updates during big outages, and Downdetector shows whether other people are reporting problems.
Why does my phone say SOS or No service on EE?
Your phone cannot connect to EE's network. That can be a local fault, a mast being upgraded, a weak signal indoors, or a problem with your phone, SIM or account. Check EE's service status first. If nothing is listed, toggle airplane mode, restart, and try the SIM in another phone.
If EE is down, are BT Mobile and other EE-based networks down too?
Usually, yes. BT Mobile, Your Co-op Mobile, Ecotalk, Lycamobile and Utility Warehouse all run on EE's network, so a fault in EE's network normally affects them as well. The EE and BT voice outage of 24 July 2025 hit both brands together. Faults with a network's own billing or account systems can affect one brand only.
Will EE compensate me for an outage?
Not automatically. Ofcom's automatic compensation scheme only covers landline and broadband. EE's pay monthly terms allow a reduction of up to 100% of your monthly charge for severe disruption that you report, so call 150 and ask. Ofcom says that if you have been without service for a while, you may also have the right to leave your contract without penalty.
How long do EE outages usually last?
It varies. National faults are usually fixed within hours: on 26 March 2025 EE said service came back in under five minutes, and the voice outage of 24 July 2025 was fixed the same evening. Local mast faults can last much longer; customers in Fowey, Cornwall were without signal for more than a week in April 2024.
Can I call 999 if EE is down?
Usually, yes. EE's terms say that if you are out of range of EE's masts, or a mast is not working, your phone may try to use another mobile network to connect a 999 or 112 call. This does not work if no network has coverage where you are, and it may not help when the fault is in EE's own call system, as some customers found on 24 July 2025. If a 999 call fails, try a landline or someone else's phone.
Did EE switch off 3G?
Yes. EE switched off its 3G network in January and February 2024, so calls now need a phone that supports 4G Calling. EE plans to start closing its 2G network from May 2029. Text HANDSET to 150 to check your phone.
