Is giffgaff down? How to check giffgaff network status

The quickest way to confirm a giffgaff outage is giffgaff's network status checker at giffgaff.com/network-status: enter a postcode, no login needed. For wider faults, giffgaff posts updates on the Service updates board in its community. giffgaff runs on O2's network, so check the O2 status page too. If nothing is listed, restart and try a manual roam.

Check the official network status

giffgaff's network status checker needs no login. You can pick the service you're having trouble with (voice, data, text, no signal or other), then enter a postcode or address or tap Use my location to see whether there's a known network problem in your area. You can report an issue and register for updates about network issues from the same tool, which runs on O2's network status system. For national faults and problems with giffgaff's own systems, giffgaff posts on the Service updates board in its community, with a status table for each service and a timestamped update history.

Is it giffgaff or your phone?

  1. Check giffgaff's network status checker at giffgaff.com/network-status. If it shows a problem near you, it is a network fault and there is nothing to fix on your phone.
  2. Look at the Service updates board on the giffgaff community (community.giffgaff.com/t/service-updates). giffgaff posts outages there, including faults in its own systems such as payments or SIM activation that a postcode checker won't show.
  3. Check the O2 status page. giffgaff runs on O2's mobile network, so a fault at an O2 mast usually hits giffgaff too. Ask someone nearby on O2, Tesco Mobile or Sky Mobile: if theirs works and yours doesn't, the problem is more likely your phone, SIM or account.
  4. Restart your phone or toggle flight mode, and check that your plan is active or you have credit. If you've just joined, giffgaff says the SIM can take from 30 minutes, and rarely up to 24 hours, to work.
  5. Do a manual roam: choose a network other than O2-UK, giffgaff or Tesco Mobile in your network settings, let the phone lose signal, then select giffgaff or O2-UK again.
  6. If you have Wi-Fi, WiFi Calling keeps calls and texts working. Downdetector (downdetector.co.uk/status/giffgaff/) shows whether other people are reporting problems, but those are user reports, not giffgaff data.

Outage, or weak signal where you are?

If giffgaff's checker shows no known problem, check how strong its signal should be at your postcode. This uses Ofcom's coverage data, not live status.

Try:

giffgaff runs on O2

giffgaff has no masts of its own. It uses O2's network, so a O2 outage usually affects giffgaff and these other brands too.

giffgaff not working? Fixes to try

No signal or SOS only

Check the status checker and the Service updates board first. Then restart or toggle flight mode, and do a manual roam: pick a network other than O2-UK, giffgaff or Tesco Mobile, let the phone lose signal, and reselect giffgaff or O2-UK. This forces the phone to register again.

Calls fail but data works

giffgaff says some phones that relied on 3G for calls have trouble since the UK 3G switch-off. Turn on VoLTE or 4G Calling in your phone's settings, and allow 2G services as a fallback. giffgaff turns on VoLTE and WiFi Calling automatically on compatible phones; iPhones need iOS 17.4 or later.

Mobile data not working

Check mobile data is on, then clean and reseat the SIM. If data still fails, check the APN in your phone's settings against giffgaff's: APN giffgaff.com, username gg, password p, MCC 234, MNC 10, authentication type PAP.

Weak signal indoors

Use WiFi Calling, which giffgaff turns on automatically on compatible phones. It isn't supported when you're abroad.

Faulty or damaged SIM

Try your SIM in another unlocked phone. If it fails there too, order a replacement and do a SIM swap from your account. giffgaff says a swap can take up to 24 hours and can be done between 4.30am and 9.30pm.

Nothing works after all the steps

Reset network settings, which giffgaff suggests as a later step because it wipes saved Wi-Fi and Bluetooth devices. If the problem continues, ask in the community or chat with giffgaff through the HelpBot, which hands you to an agent. giffgaff has no customer service phone line.

Past giffgaff outages

  • 12 September 2026

A technical issue at multiple mast sites across the south of England cut 4G voice calls, mobile data and texts for giffgaff members in those areas. giffgaff reported it after the fault was fixed, and said anyone still affected should restart their phone.

  • 1 September 2026

Members stopped receiving incoming texts while calls, outgoing texts and data worked. giffgaff raised it with Virgin Media O2 and suggested restarting or a manual roam as a workaround. The root cause was found and fixed on 14 September, after a thread of about 250 posts.

Some members could not top up, buy plans, repay loans or save card and PayPal details in the app or on the website. giffgaff traced it to a fault in its own payment validation process, which was rejecting payments before they reached its payment provider, and fixed it overnight. Vouchers still worked.

  • 5 November 2025

A fault in giffgaff's own systems stopped some members using 4G, 5G and WiFi Calling voice, activating new SIMs, porting numbers and changing their accounts. giffgaff said everything was working again by 10am on 6 November.

  • 30 June 2023

From late morning, giffgaff and Sky Mobile customers, both on O2's network, could not make or receive calls and texts, with around 1,000 Downdetector reports for each. Data was unaffected. giffgaff said a fix was rolled out at 8:50pm, though some members still had problems the next morning.

Can you get compensation for a giffgaff outage?

Ofcom's automatic compensation scheme covers landline and broadband only, so a giffgaff outage does not trigger an automatic payment. giffgaff's terms have no outage credit: they say the service is not fault-free, that network work may make it partly or completely unavailable, and that giffgaff isn't liable for failures caused by something beyond its reasonable control. The terms add that giffgaff will provide the compensation you are entitled to under your legal rights, so raise a long outage with an agent.

Fed up with giffgaff outages?

Switching to a brand on the same network will not help during an outage, because it uses the same masts. A SIM on a different network will. You keep your number by texting PAC to 65075.

giffgaff outage FAQs

Is there a problem with giffgaff today?
We can't tell you live. giffgaff's network status checker at giffgaff.com/network-status shows known faults for your postcode, and the Service updates board in the giffgaff community lists current outages and system problems. As giffgaff runs on O2's network, O2's status checker is worth a look too. Downdetector shows other people's reports.
Why does my phone say SOS or No service on giffgaff?
Your phone cannot connect to the network. The cause may be a local O2 mast fault, planned work, weak signal indoors, a SIM that hasn't activated yet, no active plan or credit, or a phone problem. Check the status checker and Service updates, then restart and do a manual roam.
If O2 is down, is giffgaff down too?
Usually, yes. giffgaff runs on O2's mobile network, so an O2 mast or network fault normally hits giffgaff, Tesco Mobile and Sky Mobile too, as on 30 June 2023. giffgaff also has faults of its own that O2 customers don't see, such as the payment problem in August 2026 and the SIM activation fault in November 2025.
Can I phone giffgaff about an outage?
No. giffgaff has no customer service phone line. Check the Service updates board first, since giffgaff posts known outages there. For a problem on your own line, chat with the HelpBot in the app or on the website, which passes you to an agent, or ask the community. The 43430 service line handles account texts such as balance checks.
Will giffgaff compensate me for an outage?
Not automatically. Ofcom's automatic compensation scheme only covers landline and broadband, and giffgaff's terms have no outage credit. They say the service is not fault-free, but that giffgaff will provide the compensation you're entitled to under your legal rights. If you lose service for a long time, raise it with an agent.
How long do giffgaff outages usually last?
Most are fixed within hours. The June 2023 call and text outage started late morning and a fix went out that evening, and the November 2025 SIM activation fault was resolved the next morning. Some take longer: the incoming text problem that started on 1 September 2026 took two weeks to fix.
Can I call 999 if giffgaff is down?
Usually, yes. Ofcom says that when a mobile network is down, a phone should be able to roam onto another network to make an emergency call. It won't work if no network has coverage where you are. If a 999 call won't connect, use a landline or someone else's phone.
