About the Apple iPad Pro 12.9 (2022)

The iPad Pro 12.9 (2022) is the last of Apple's mini-LED 12.9-inch Pros, and it has aged into one of the more sensible ways to get a genuinely professional tablet. Its defining feature is the Liquid Retina XDR display: a mini-LED backlight that hits 1,000 nits full-screen and 1,600 nits peak on HDR content, which no other iPad of its era matched and which still makes it a strong choice for photo editing, video review and film watching. The M2 chip is the same class of silicon Apple put in MacBooks, so multi-track video, large RAW files and demanding apps run without drama, and it qualifies for Apple Intelligence where the older A-series iPads do not. Apple Pencil hover, which previews your stroke about a centimetre above the glass, arrived with this generation. The honest caveats are size and weight, since a 12.9-inch tablet plus the Magic Keyboard is heavier than some laptops, and the fact that iPadOS still limits how far you can push a machine this capable.

Frequently asked questions

Is the iPad Pro 12.9 (2022) worth buying?
Yes, for creative and professional users who will actually use the mini-LED XDR display and M2 performance. It handles video editing, illustration and multitasking as well as many laptops, and it supports Apple Intelligence. Casual users who mainly browse and stream will get almost the same experience from a standard iPad for far less.
What is the difference between the iPad Pro 12.9 (2022) and the 11-inch model?
The 12.9-inch model uses a mini-LED Liquid Retina XDR panel rated at 1,000 nits full-screen and 1,600 nits peak HDR brightness, while the 11-inch uses a standard Liquid Retina LCD at 600 nits. Both share the M2 chip, 120Hz ProMotion, the same cameras and Apple Pencil hover, so the display and physical size are the real dividing lines.
Does the iPad Pro 12.9 (2022) support Apple Intelligence?
Yes. Apple Intelligence requires an M-series chip, and this model uses the M2 with at least 8GB of RAM. That covers the on-device writing tools, image features and the newer Siri capabilities.
Which Apple Pencil works with the iPad Pro 12.9 (2022)?
It supports the second-generation Apple Pencil, which attaches and charges magnetically on the side of the tablet, as well as the Apple Pencil (USB-C). This generation introduced Apple Pencil hover, which shows a preview of where the tip will land from up to 12mm above the display. It does not support the Apple Pencil Pro.
How much RAM and storage does the iPad Pro 12.9 (2022) have?
The 128GB, 256GB and 512GB versions come with 8GB of RAM, while the 1TB and 2TB versions have 16GB. If you edit long-form video or work with very large project files, the 1TB and higher tiers are the ones worth targeting for the extra memory as much as the space.
Can the iPad Pro 12.9 (2022) replace a laptop?
For writing, design, illustration, photo work and video editing it can, especially paired with the Magic Keyboard and an external display. The limits are software rather than hardware: iPadOS file handling, background processing and professional desktop apps still lag behind macOS, so developers and anyone tied to specific desktop software should test their workflow first.
