The Apple iPad 10.2 (2021) is the ninth-generation entry-level iPad, and it now sits at the value end of Apple's tablet range rather than anywhere near the cutting edge. It still handles the core jobs well: browsing, streaming, video calls, reading and schoolwork all run smoothly on the A13 Bionic chip, and the 10.2-inch Retina display is bright enough indoors, if a little reflective because the glass is not laminated to the panel. The 12MP ultra-wide front camera with Centre Stage is the feature families notice most, keeping you framed on video calls as you shift about. The trade-offs are all age related. It charges over Lightning rather than USB-C, it works only with the first-generation Apple Pencil, which has to be plugged into the charging port to pair, and it cannot run Apple Intelligence or Stage Manager. It is also the oldest iPad Apple still supports with new iPadOS releases, so the remaining update runway is short. As a shared family or classroom tablet it makes sense; as a laptop stand-in it does not.
