About the Xiaomi Redmi Note 17

The Redmi Note 17 is a very different phone from the Redmi Note 15 it replaces, and whether it suits you depends on what you valued in the old one. Xiaomi has built this generation around endurance: a 7,700mAh silicon-carbon battery, around 40 percent more capacity than before, sits behind a near-7-inch 120Hz AMOLED screen that suits video and reading. To make that work at this level, some things have gone. The Snapdragon 4 Gen 4 is a step down from the Note 15's Snapdragon 6 Gen 3, and GSMArena's testing found its graphics performance well behind, so it is better at messaging, browsing and streaming than demanding games. The camera loses its ultrawide lens and optical stabilisation, leaving a single 50MP main camera that records video at up to 1080p. The phone is also 47g heavier than the Note 15. It keeps microSD expansion, an IR blaster and IP65 dust and splash protection, and Xiaomi promises six years of security updates. If battery life and a big screen matter more to you than camera flexibility or gaming, it makes sense; otherwise the outgoing Note 15 is the better-rounded phone.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Redmi Note 17 worth buying?
The Redmi Note 17 is worth buying if battery life and a large screen are your priorities: its 7,700mAh battery lasts well beyond a day and Xiaomi rates it at more than two days of typical use. It is a weaker all-rounder than the Redmi Note 15, with a slower chip, a single rear camera and video limited to 1080p. If you want a better camera and more performance, the Redmi Note 17 Pro is the step up.
How does the Redmi Note 17 compare to the Redmi Note 15?
The Redmi Note 17 has a bigger 6.99-inch screen and a much larger 7,700mAh battery against the Note 15's 6.77 inches and 5,520mAh, with the same 45W charging. In return it drops to a Snapdragon 4 Gen 4 chip from the Snapdragon 6 Gen 3, replaces the 108MP stabilised main camera and 8MP ultrawide with a single 50MP camera, and is heavier at 225g against 178g. Choose the Note 15 for the camera and performance, or the Note 17 for battery life.
Should I buy the Redmi Note 17 or the Redmi Note 17 Pro?
The Redmi Note 17 Pro moves up to a sharper 6.83-inch 1.5K display with 3,500 nits peak brightness, a Snapdragon 6s Gen 4 chip, an 8,340mAh battery with 67W charging, and a stabilised 50MP main camera paired with an 8MP ultrawide. It is also rated IP66/IP68 for immersion, where the Note 17 is IP65 dust and splash resistant. The standard Note 17 keeps microSD expansion and the larger 6.99-inch screen, so it suits buyers who mainly want size and storage flexibility.
How good is the Redmi Note 17 camera?
The Redmi Note 17 has one rear camera, a 50MP f/1.8 main sensor without optical image stabilisation, so there is no ultrawide or zoom lens. Android Headlines found its daylight photos fine but less detailed than the Redmi Note 17 Pro Max's, with noticeably weaker low-light results. Video tops out at 1080p at 30fps, and the front camera is 16MP.
Does the Redmi Note 17 have expandable storage or a headphone jack?
Yes to expandable storage: the Redmi Note 17 takes a microSD card of up to 2TB, though it shares the tray with the second SIM. There is no 3.5mm headphone jack, so you will need USB-C or Bluetooth headphones. Xiaomi UK sells it with 6GB of RAM and 128GB or 256GB of storage.
How long will the Redmi Note 17 get software updates?
Xiaomi promises six years of security updates for the Redmi Note 17, which launched on Android 16 with HyperOS 3. Its UK product page does not state how many major Android version upgrades are included, so the security patch window is the firm commitment.

Based on main-sensor size (1-inch / 1/1.3" beats 1/2.0"), telephoto reach (periscope > 5x > 3x optical), image processing tier (Apple Pro, Pixel Pro, Galaxy Ultra, Honor Magic Pro, Xiaomi Ultra), pro video features (ProRes, Apple Log, Dolby Vision), camera-partnership branding (Leica, Hasselblad, Zeiss) and OIS. Older flagships are de-rated since image processing pipelines have advanced significantly each generation. Megapixel count is deliberately downweighted — it correlates poorly with real-world camera quality. Where DXOMARK has lab-tested the phone, its measured score replaces this estimate.

Based on battery capacity (mAh) adjusted for platform efficiency calibrated against NotebookCheck, Tom's Guide, GSMArena and CNET reviewer tests. Apple A-series gets +45% (iOS process freezing + LTPO 1Hz + tuned panels make iPhone Pro Max outlast many 6500+ mAh Android phones in measured tests). Top Snapdragon / Dimensity flagships get +15%, budget chipsets are penalised −15% to −25% to reflect less efficient displays and looser background limits. Charging speed is excluded — see the separate Fast charging tag for that.
