About the Xiaomi 12

The Xiaomi 12 is the rare flagship that deliberately stayed small, and that single decision defines who it suits. At 6.28 inches and 180g it is easy to use one-handed in a market where almost every other flagship of its generation had grown past 6.5 inches, yet Xiaomi did not water down the internals to get there. It runs the same Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 as much larger rivals, charges at 67W over a cable and 50W wirelessly, and the 120Hz AMOLED panel is bright and colour accurate. The compromises are real, though. The 5MP third camera is a telemacro rather than a genuine zoom lens, so there is no proper optical zoom at all, and the 4,500mAh battery has to work hard driving a warm-running chip, which means a day of use rather than a day and a half. There is also no official IP water resistance rating, which is a notable omission at this level.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Xiaomi 12 worth buying?
It is worth buying if a compact flagship is your priority, because very few phones combine a top-tier chip with a 6.28-inch body. If you take a lot of zoomed photos or want official water resistance, look elsewhere, as the Xiaomi 12 has neither a telephoto lens nor an IP rating.
Does the Xiaomi 12 have a telephoto zoom camera?
No. The rear setup is a 50MP main camera, a 13MP ultrawide and a 5MP telemacro lens designed for close-up shots, not distance. Any zoomed image is a digital crop from the main sensor, so detail falls away quickly beyond about 2x.
Is the Xiaomi 12 waterproof?
No, the Xiaomi 12 does not carry an official IP water or dust resistance rating. It should survive light rain and the occasional splash, but it is not designed for immersion and liquid damage will not be covered.
How fast does the Xiaomi 12 charge?
The Xiaomi 12 supports 67W wired charging, which fills the 4,500mAh battery in roughly 40 minutes, plus 50W wireless charging and 10W reverse wireless charging for accessories. Wireless charging at that speed is unusual and genuinely useful.
Does the Xiaomi 12 have a headphone jack or microSD slot?
No to both. There is no 3.5mm headphone jack and no microSD expansion, so choose between the 128GB and 256GB versions carefully. It does have stereo speakers tuned by Harman Kardon.
Should I get the Xiaomi 12 or the Xiaomi 12 Lite?
The Xiaomi 12 is the faster and more compact phone, with the flagship Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, a larger 4,500mAh battery and 50W wireless charging the Lite lacks entirely. The 12 Lite is thinner and lighter with a bigger 6.55-inch screen and a 108MP main camera, but its Snapdragon 778G is a mid-range chip.

Based on main-sensor size (1-inch / 1/1.3" beats 1/2.0"), telephoto reach (periscope > 5x > 3x optical), image processing tier (Apple Pro, Pixel Pro, Galaxy Ultra, Honor Magic Pro, Xiaomi Ultra), pro video features (ProRes, Apple Log, Dolby Vision), camera-partnership branding (Leica, Hasselblad, Zeiss) and OIS. Older flagships are de-rated since image processing pipelines have advanced significantly each generation. Megapixel count is deliberately downweighted — it correlates poorly with real-world camera quality.

Based on battery capacity (mAh) adjusted for platform efficiency calibrated against NotebookCheck, Tom's Guide, GSMArena and CNET reviewer tests. Apple A-series gets +45% (iOS process freezing + LTPO 1Hz + tuned panels make iPhone Pro Max outlast many 6500+ mAh Android phones in measured tests). Top Snapdragon / Dimensity flagships get +15%, budget chipsets are penalised −15% to −25% to reflect less efficient displays and looser background limits. Charging speed is excluded — see the separate Fast charging tag for that.
