About the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE

The Galaxy S20 FE is the phone that worked out which flagship features people actually use, and quietly dropped the rest. Samsung kept the 120Hz screen, the IP68 rating, wireless charging and a proper 3x optical telephoto lens, then saved money on the things buyers notice least: the back is plastic rather than glass, the front is Gorilla Glass 3, and the display resolution is 1080p instead of the quad HD panel on the standard S20. In use, almost none of that registers. It remains one of the most sensible Android buys of its era, helped by a 4,500mAh battery that lasts longer than the smaller S20 and a 32MP selfie camera that outshoots most flagships of the time. UK buyers should check which version they are looking at, because the 4G model uses Samsung's Exynos 990 and the 5G model uses the Snapdragon 865, which runs cooler and more efficiently. Samsung supported it through three Android upgrades to Android 13 and One UI 5.1, so its update window has now closed.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE worth buying?
Yes, if you want flagship features cheaply and are buying second-hand or refurbished. You still get a 120Hz AMOLED, IP68 water resistance, wireless charging, microSD expansion and a 3x optical telephoto, which is a lot for the money. The plastic back and expired software support are the main compromises.
What is the difference between the Galaxy S20 FE 4G and 5G?
The 5G model uses the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865, while the 4G model sold in the UK and Europe uses Samsung's own Exynos 990. The Snapdragon version generally runs cooler and is a little more efficient, so it is the one to look for if both are available.
Does the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE have wireless charging and a microSD slot?
Yes to both. It supports 15W Qi wireless charging plus 4.5W reverse wireless charging for earbuds or a watch, and takes a microSD card alongside its 128GB or 256GB of built-in storage. There is no 3.5mm headphone jack.
How good is the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE camera?
It is a genuinely capable triple setup: a 12MP main sensor with optical stabilisation, an 8MP telephoto giving true 3x optical zoom and a 12MP ultrawide. The 32MP front camera is one of the better selfie cameras of its generation, and video records at up to 4K 60fps.
Does the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE still receive updates?
No. It launched on Android 10 and received three major Android upgrades, finishing on Android 13 with One UI 5.1, plus four years of security patches. Both windows have now closed, so it gets no further updates.
Should I buy the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE or the Galaxy S20?
The standard Galaxy S20 has the sharper 1440p Dynamic AMOLED 2X screen, a glass back and a much smaller, lighter 163g body, so it is the nicer object to hold. The S20 FE gives you a bigger 6.5-inch display, a 4,500mAh battery instead of 4,000mAh, a proper 3x optical telephoto rather than the S20's hybrid zoom, and a far better 32MP selfie camera. For most people the FE is the more practical of the two.

Based on main-sensor size (1-inch / 1/1.3" beats 1/2.0"), telephoto reach (periscope > 5x > 3x optical), image processing tier (Apple Pro, Pixel Pro, Galaxy Ultra, Honor Magic Pro, Xiaomi Ultra), pro video features (ProRes, Apple Log, Dolby Vision), camera-partnership branding (Leica, Hasselblad, Zeiss) and OIS. Older flagships are de-rated since image processing pipelines have advanced significantly each generation. Megapixel count is deliberately downweighted — it correlates poorly with real-world camera quality.

Based on battery capacity (mAh) adjusted for platform efficiency calibrated against NotebookCheck, Tom's Guide, GSMArena and CNET reviewer tests. Apple A-series gets +45% (iOS process freezing + LTPO 1Hz + tuned panels make iPhone Pro Max outlast many 6500+ mAh Android phones in measured tests). Top Snapdragon / Dimensity flagships get +15%, budget chipsets are penalised −15% to −25% to reflect less efficient displays and looser background limits. Charging speed is excluded — see the separate Fast charging tag for that.
