About the Oppo A16

The Oppo A16 sits right at the bottom of Oppo's range, and several years on from its 2021 launch that is exactly how it should be judged. It was never quick. The Helio G35 handles messaging, calls, streaming and light browsing without complaint, but it stumbles on demanding games and turns sluggish once a dozen apps are open. What it does well is last. A 5,000mAh battery paired with an undemanding 720p LCD makes two days of light use realistic, and the 3.5mm headphone jack, microSD slot and side-mounted fingerprint reader are the practical touches budget buyers actually notice day to day. The 13MP main camera is perfectly usable in daylight and struggles indoors, and there is no 5G here, so it will be a 4G handset for the rest of its life. Software support has ended, which matters if you do banking or work email on your phone. As a first handset for a child, a spare, or a knockabout phone for someone who only needs the basics, it still stacks up. Anyone asking more of a phone should look newer.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Oppo A16 worth buying?
The Oppo A16 is worth considering only as a basic, low-cost handset for calls, messaging and light browsing. Its Helio G35 chip and 720p screen are entry-level even by 2021 standards, and it no longer receives software updates. Battery life and the headphone jack are its genuine strengths.
Does the Oppo A16 have 5G?
No, the Oppo A16 is a 4G-only phone. It will connect to UK 4G networks perfectly well, but you cannot get 5G speeds from it, so if you want a phone that keeps up with network upgrades you need a different model.
How long does the Oppo A16 battery last?
The 5,000mAh battery is the A16's strongest feature. Because the modest Helio G35 chip and 720p LCD draw relatively little power, light users can realistically get through two days between charges. Charging is slow by modern standards, so plan on an overnight top-up.
Is the Oppo A16 camera good?
The 13MP main camera takes acceptable photos in good daylight but loses detail quickly indoors and after dark. The 2MP macro and mono sensors alongside it add little in practice. Treat it as a camera for casual snaps rather than anything you want to print or crop.
Does the Oppo A16 still get software updates?
No. The A16 shipped with ColorOS 11.1 based on Android 11 and its update window has long since closed, so it no longer receives Android version upgrades or security patches. That is worth weighing up if you use mobile banking or store work data on the device.
What is the difference between the Oppo A16 and the Oppo A16s?
The two phones share the same 6.52-inch HD+ LCD, Helio G35 chip, 13MP camera and 5,000mAh battery, so day-to-day they behave identically. The A16s adds NFC for contactless payments and comes only in a 4GB RAM with 64GB storage configuration, while the A16 was also sold in a cheaper 3GB with 32GB version. If you want to pay with your phone, the A16s is the one to get.

Based on main-sensor size (1-inch / 1/1.3" beats 1/2.0"), telephoto reach (periscope > 5x > 3x optical), image processing tier (Apple Pro, Pixel Pro, Galaxy Ultra, Honor Magic Pro, Xiaomi Ultra), pro video features (ProRes, Apple Log, Dolby Vision), camera-partnership branding (Leica, Hasselblad, Zeiss) and OIS. Older flagships are de-rated since image processing pipelines have advanced significantly each generation. Megapixel count is deliberately downweighted — it correlates poorly with real-world camera quality.

Based on battery capacity (mAh) adjusted for platform efficiency calibrated against NotebookCheck, Tom's Guide, GSMArena and CNET reviewer tests. Apple A-series gets +45% (iOS process freezing + LTPO 1Hz + tuned panels make iPhone Pro Max outlast many 6500+ mAh Android phones in measured tests). Top Snapdragon / Dimensity flagships get +15%, budget chipsets are penalised −15% to −25% to reflect less efficient displays and looser background limits. Charging speed is excluded — see the separate Fast charging tag for that.
