About the Oppo A16s

The Oppo A16s is a mild reworking of the A16 rather than a new phone, aimed squarely at buyers who want something cheap, sturdy and long-lasting without caring much about performance. The formula is simple: a large 6.52-inch screen, a 5,000mAh battery that shrugs off a full day, and a build that feels more solid in the hand than the price suggests. Oppo's changes over the standard A16 are small but sensible, standardising on 4GB of memory and 64GB of storage so the phone has a little more headroom for apps. Everything else is entry-level and behaves like it. The Helio G35 is fine for messaging, calls, maps and video, but stumbles in demanding games and when several apps are open. The screen is only HD+, so text and photos look noticeably soft next to sharper mid-range panels, and the 13MP camera is a daylight-only proposition. Since it shipped on Android 11 back in 2021 and Oppo's update commitment for it has long since ended, it is best viewed as a spare or a simple handset rather than a phone to keep for years.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Oppo A16s worth buying?
The Oppo A16s is worth considering only as a low-cost spare, a first phone or a simple device for someone who mainly calls, texts and browses. Battery life is genuinely strong and the build quality is decent, but the HD+ screen, slow Helio G35 chip and lapsed software support make it a poor choice as a main phone in 2026.
Does the Oppo A16s have 5G?
No. The Oppo A16s is a 4G LTE handset and will connect to UK 4G networks only. Oppo's cheapest 5G phones sit in the A5 and Reno lines if you need 5G speeds.
What is the difference between the Oppo A16s and the Oppo A16?
Very little. Both use the same 6.52-inch HD+ screen, Helio G35 chip, 13MP triple camera and 5,000mAh battery in an identical body. The A16s standardises on 4GB of RAM with 64GB of storage and adds NFC, whereas the A16 was also sold in a slower 3GB/32GB configuration.
How long does the Oppo A16s battery last?
Comfortably a full day and often into a second for lighter users, thanks to the 5,000mAh cell paired with a low-power chip and a low-resolution screen. The catch is charging speed, which is slow enough that an overnight or lengthy top-up is the norm.
Is the Oppo A16s camera any good?
It is basic. The 13MP main camera produces usable photos in bright daylight but loses detail quickly indoors and after dark, and there is no optical stabilisation. The 2MP macro and 2MP depth sensors contribute little beyond a portrait mode.
Does the Oppo A16s have a headphone jack and microSD slot?
Yes. It keeps a 3.5mm headphone jack and supports expandable storage via microSD, so you are not stuck with the 64GB built in. It also has a side-mounted fingerprint reader and face unlock.

Based on main-sensor size (1-inch / 1/1.3" beats 1/2.0"), telephoto reach (periscope > 5x > 3x optical), image processing tier (Apple Pro, Pixel Pro, Galaxy Ultra, Honor Magic Pro, Xiaomi Ultra), pro video features (ProRes, Apple Log, Dolby Vision), camera-partnership branding (Leica, Hasselblad, Zeiss) and OIS. Older flagships are de-rated since image processing pipelines have advanced significantly each generation. Megapixel count is deliberately downweighted — it correlates poorly with real-world camera quality.

Based on battery capacity (mAh) adjusted for platform efficiency calibrated against NotebookCheck, Tom's Guide, GSMArena and CNET reviewer tests. Apple A-series gets +45% (iOS process freezing + LTPO 1Hz + tuned panels make iPhone Pro Max outlast many 6500+ mAh Android phones in measured tests). Top Snapdragon / Dimensity flagships get +15%, budget chipsets are penalised −15% to −25% to reflect less efficient displays and looser background limits. Charging speed is excluded — see the separate Fast charging tag for that.
