About the OnePlus 9R

The OnePlus 9R is the pragmatist's version of the 9 series, built around the idea that most of what makes a OnePlus feel fast has nothing to do with having the newest flagship chip. It reuses the excellent 6.55-inch 120Hz Fluid AMOLED panel from the standard 9 and pairs it with Qualcomm's Snapdragon 870, a refined version of the previous flagship silicon that runs cooler and more predictably under sustained load than the Snapdragon 888 it sidesteps. In practice that means gaming sessions hold their frame rates rather than throttling, which is exactly what the 9R was aimed at. The compromises are all on the camera: the 48MP main sensor with optical stabilisation is capable in daylight but the 16MP ultrawide and the two small support lenses fall well short of the Hasselblad-tuned setup on the 9 and 9 Pro. There is no wireless charging and no formal IP rating either, though 65W wired charging is unusually fast. It was primarily an India-market model rather than a UK launch device.

Frequently asked questions

Is the OnePlus 9R worth buying?
The OnePlus 9R is worth buying if you want flagship-grade speed and a 120Hz screen without paying for the best camera hardware, and it remains a capable performer thanks to the Snapdragon 870. It launched in 2021, so its Android and security update window has closed, which limits it as a long-term main phone. The camera is its clearest weak point compared with the OnePlus 9.
Is the OnePlus 9R good for gaming?
Yes, gaming is the 9R's strongest suit. The Snapdragon 870 sustains performance well without the heat build-up that affected Snapdragon 888 phones of the same era, and the 120Hz Fluid AMOLED display keeps motion smooth. Up to 12GB of RAM and UFS 3.1 storage keep games loading quickly and staying resident in memory.
Is the OnePlus 9R camera good?
The 48MP main camera with optical image stabilisation produces solid daylight shots, but the supporting lenses are basic: a 16MP ultrawide plus 5MP macro and 2MP monochrome sensors that add little. It does not have the Hasselblad colour tuning or the 50MP ultrawide found on the OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro. If photography is your priority, this is the wrong phone in the range.
Does the OnePlus 9R have wireless charging?
No, the OnePlus 9R does not support wireless charging, unlike the OnePlus 9 which offers 15W wireless. It does include 65W Warp Charge over USB-C, which refills the 4,500mAh battery from empty in well under an hour. There is also no official IP water resistance rating and no 3.5mm headphone jack.
How long does the OnePlus 9R battery last?
The 4,500mAh battery generally sees out a full day of mixed use, and the efficient Snapdragon 870 helps it hold up better under gaming than many rivals of the same period. Running the display at the full 120Hz will shorten that noticeably. Charging at 65W means a short plug-in restores most of a day's use.
How does the OnePlus 9R compare to the OnePlus 9?
They share the same 6.55-inch 120Hz Fluid AMOLED display, 4,500mAh battery and 65W charging, so the everyday feel is very similar. The OnePlus 9 pulls ahead with the Snapdragon 888, a Hasselblad-tuned camera system including a 50MP ultrawide, and 15W wireless charging that the 9R lacks. The 9R answers with the cooler-running Snapdragon 870, which is arguably the better chip for long gaming sessions.
