About the OnePlus 8

The OnePlus 8 was the point where OnePlus stopped being the plucky value brand and started charging proper flagship money, and six years on that makes it an interesting second-hand and refurbished buy rather than a new one. It uses the same Snapdragon 865 as the OnePlus 8 Pro and every other 2020 Android flagship, so day-to-day speed still holds up well for messaging, browsing and streaming. The 6.55-inch AMOLED panel runs at 90Hz, which is the feature most people notice first, and OxygenOS remains one of the cleaner, faster Android skins of that era. The compromises are where it differs from the Pro: no wireless charging, no official IP68 rating on most units, and a weaker camera set built around a solid 48MP main sensor, a serviceable ultrawide and a 2MP macro lens that adds very little. Software support has ended, with Android 13 the final version, so this is a phone for someone who wants a capable, light, well-built handset and is relaxed about long-term updates.

Frequently asked questions

Is the OnePlus 8 worth buying?
Only as a cheap refurbished or second-hand handset. The Snapdragon 865 and 90Hz AMOLED screen still handle everyday use comfortably, but the phone stopped receiving Android updates at Android 13 and no longer gets security patches. If you want guaranteed long-term support, a newer mid-range phone is the safer choice.
Does the OnePlus 8 have wireless charging?
No. Wireless charging was reserved for the OnePlus 8 Pro that year. The OnePlus 8 charges at 30W over USB-C using Warp Charge 30T, which is fast enough to fill the 4,300mAh battery in well under an hour.
Is the OnePlus 8 waterproof?
Not reliably. OnePlus only certified IP68 on carrier-sold units in some markets, and most SIM-free OnePlus 8 handsets were sold without an official rating. Treat it as splash resistant rather than waterproof, particularly on a used device where seals may have aged.
How long will the OnePlus 8 receive updates?
It will not receive any more. OxygenOS 13, based on Android 13, was the final major update, and security patches have since stopped. Apps from the Play Store will continue to work for some time, but you will not get new Android features or fixes.
Is the OnePlus 8 camera good?
It is decent in good light and unremarkable elsewhere. The 48MP main sensor with optical stabilisation produces clean daylight shots and usable night mode images, but the 16MP ultrawide is noticeably softer and the 2MP macro camera is close to pointless. There is no telephoto lens, so zoomed shots are cropped digitally.
What is the difference between the OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro?
The OnePlus 8 Pro has a larger 6.78-inch 1440p display at 120Hz instead of 6.55-inch 1080p at 90Hz, adds a 48MP ultrawide and 3x telephoto camera, includes wireless charging and a full IP68 rating, and carries a bigger 4,510mAh battery. The standard OnePlus 8 is lighter at 180g and easier to use one-handed.
