About the Motorola Moto G22

The Moto G22 arrived in early 2022 as one of the cheapest phones in the UK to offer a 90Hz screen, and that headline feature is still the first thing people notice. In practice the appeal is mixed. The higher refresh rate makes menus look fluid, but the MediaTek Helio G37 behind it is one of the slower chips Motorola has shipped, so the phone can stutter in exactly the moments the smooth display is meant to help with. Where it earns its keep is stamina and practicality: a 5,000mAh battery that easily clears a day, a headphone jack, microSD expansion and NFC for contactless payments, all in a light plastic body. The four-camera array on the back is more about the numbers than the results, with the 50MP main sensor doing the real work and the macro and depth lenses adding little. Several years on, its software window has closed, so it now makes sense mainly as a simple, low-cost handset for calls, messaging and light browsing rather than a primary phone for a heavy user.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Motorola Moto G22 worth buying?
The Moto G22 is only worth buying now as a cheap secondary or first phone. The 5,000mAh battery, 90Hz screen, headphone jack and NFC still cover the essentials, but the Helio G37 chipset was slow at launch and has aged badly, and the phone is past its Android update window. Anyone using it as a daily driver would be better served by a newer Moto G.
Does the Motorola Moto G22 have 5G?
No, the Moto G22 is a 4G LTE phone only. Motorola sold a separate Moto G22 sibling range with 5G at the time, and within this generation the Moto G62 5G was the entry point for 5G. For calls, streaming and browsing on UK networks, 4G remains perfectly usable.
How good is the Motorola Moto G22 camera?
The Moto G22 has a quad rear camera made up of a 50MP main sensor, an 8MP ultrawide, a 2MP macro and a 2MP depth lens, plus a 16MP selfie camera. Daylight shots from the main sensor are respectable for the price with natural colour, but low-light results are soft and the macro and depth lenses add little of value.
Does the Motorola Moto G22 have a headphone jack and expandable storage?
Yes to both. The Moto G22 keeps a 3.5mm headphone jack and takes a microSD card up to 1TB alongside its 64GB or 128GB of built-in storage. It also has NFC, so contactless payments work.
How long does the Motorola Moto G22 battery last?
The Moto G22's 5,000mAh battery comfortably lasts a full day and often longer, helped by the low-power Helio G37 chip and the HD+ resolution screen. Charging is 15W wired only, so a full top-up takes well over an hour and there is no wireless charging.
Should I buy the Motorola Moto G22 or the Moto G23?
The Moto G23 is the clearly better phone of the two. It uses the faster Helio G85 chip, charges at 30W rather than 15W, and swaps the G22's largely decorative depth lens for a more useful camera set, while both share a 6.5-inch 90Hz HD+ screen and a 5,000mAh battery. Only choose the Moto G22 if you want the absolute cheapest of the pair.

Based on main-sensor size (1-inch / 1/1.3" beats 1/2.0"), telephoto reach (periscope > 5x > 3x optical), image processing tier (Apple Pro, Pixel Pro, Galaxy Ultra, Honor Magic Pro, Xiaomi Ultra), pro video features (ProRes, Apple Log, Dolby Vision), camera-partnership branding (Leica, Hasselblad, Zeiss) and OIS. Older flagships are de-rated since image processing pipelines have advanced significantly each generation. Megapixel count is deliberately downweighted — it correlates poorly with real-world camera quality.

Based on battery capacity (mAh) adjusted for platform efficiency calibrated against NotebookCheck, Tom's Guide, GSMArena and CNET reviewer tests. Apple A-series gets +45% (iOS process freezing + LTPO 1Hz + tuned panels make iPhone Pro Max outlast many 6500+ mAh Android phones in measured tests). Top Snapdragon / Dimensity flagships get +15%, budget chipsets are penalised −15% to −25% to reflect less efficient displays and looser background limits. Charging speed is excluded — see the separate Fast charging tag for that.
