The Pixel 4 XL was Google's larger flagship for 2019, and its headline addition was a telephoto camera, the first on any Pixel, paired with a 90Hz display that made scrolling and animations noticeably smoother than the Pixel 3 XL it replaced. The 6.3-inch P-OLED screen is sharp and vivid, and the dual 12.2MP plus 16MP camera system still produces excellent stills in good light thanks to Google's computational photography, including a genuinely useful Astrophotography mode for night sky shots. The trade-offs were clear even at launch: a 3,700mAh battery that struggled to last a full day of heavy use, no ultrawide lens at a time when rivals were adding them, and the radar-based Motion Sense gesture system that mostly went unused. By 2026 this is a phone worth considering only as a very cheap secondary or backup device. Google ended software support years ago, so it no longer receives Android version upgrades or monthly security patches, which is a genuine security consideration for a primary phone. Anyone still using one today should treat it as a stopgap rather than a long-term choice, and budget-conscious buyers are better served by a newer, still-supported Pixel.
