Apple's first foldable is called the iPhone Duo, not the iPhone Fold. It was announced on Wednesday 9 September 2026, UK pre-orders open at 1pm on Friday 16 October, and it goes on sale on Friday 23 October at £1,999 for 256GB. It opens book-style from a 5.4-inch cover display into a 7.6-inch inner screen, runs the same A20 Pro chip as the iPhone 18 Pro, uses Touch ID in the side button instead of Face ID, and is eSIM-only worldwide. At 5.2mm open it is the thinnest device Apple has made.

The five-week gap after the iPhone 18 Pro is the staggered launch the summer reporting half-predicted: it said September or December, and the answer was October. EE, O2, Vodafone and Sky Mobile have all confirmed they will range the Duo, and Vodafone's product page already lists the pre-order date, so UK network contracts will be available from day one rather than trickling in.

The £1,999 entry price is exactly the figure that leaked more than a year ago, converted at Apple's usual dollar-pound parity. What it is priced against still matters. Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold8 launched in August at £1,699 and the Fold8 Ultra at £1,899, both on their eighth generation of hinge. Apple is entering the category at a premium to the most mature rival, with a first-generation device. It has done that before and been rewarded for it; it is still an aggressive position rather than a safe one.
Why iPhone Duo?
The name refers to the two displays. Nobody had it: for over a year the phone was reported as the iPhone Fold, with iPhone Ultra used by some outlets, and we listed it under the Fold name because that is what people were searching for. The page you are reading has moved from that address and the old one redirects here. Apple's own line-up now runs iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max and iPhone Duo, with the standard iPhone 18 reported for spring 2027.
The two displays
The inner screen is a 7.6-inch OLED at 1878 x 2670 pixels and 430ppi, with ProMotion up to 120Hz, Always-On and a nano-texture finish that cuts reflections. The cover screen is a 5.4-inch OLED at 1398 x 2034 and 460ppi, the same density as the iPhone 18 Pro, so the phone closed works like a slightly narrow iPhone rather than a compromised outer panel. Both reach 3,000 nits peak outdoors.
The crease is the question every foldable buyer asks. Apple describes a new hinge and a multi-layer laminated panel but has not published a crease-depth figure, and the pre-launch claim of under 0.15mm came from suppliers rather than Apple. We will update this when reviewers have measured it. The cover is Ceramic Shield 2, which Apple rates at three times the scratch resistance of the previous generation.
Cameras: two lenses, and a 2x crop
On the back there is a 48MP Fusion main camera at f/1.6 (26mm) and a 48MP Fusion ultrawide at f/2.2 (13mm). Apple lists a 12MP optical-quality 2x telephoto at 52mm, which is a crop from the centre of the main sensor rather than a third lens. There is no 4x tetraprism telephoto and no variable aperture, both of which the iPhone 18 Pro has. That is the trade for the folding screen, and it is the same one Samsung makes on the standard Fold8.
The front has two cameras: a 12MP Center Stage camera at f/2.2 on the cover, and an under-display FaceTime camera at f/1.8 behind the inner screen, so video calls work in either orientation.
Touch ID, not Face ID
The rumour that held up best. The iPhone Duo has a Touch ID sensor built into the side button and no Face ID, the first new iPhone without it since the third-generation iPhone SE in 2022. The reason is depth: a Face ID array needs room behind the display, and a phone that is 5.2mm thick when open does not have it on either panel. Apple Pay, app sign-in and unlocking all use the fingerprint sensor.

Apple does not publish capacity in milliamp-hours, and the 4,700mAh to 5,800mAh estimates that circulated before launch remain unconfirmed. The cover-display figure is higher than the iPhone 18 Pro Max's 43 hours; the inner display, at nearly twice the area, is rated for 31.
eSIM only
The iPhone Duo has no SIM tray anywhere in the world. It supports dual eSIM, with two active at once and eight or more stored. Every UK network and the major MVNOs now issue eSIMs and can move an existing number across, so for most buyers this is a setup step rather than a limitation. It matters if you are on a small provider that still only issues physical SIMs, or if you swap local SIMs when travelling, in which case a travel eSIM replaces that.
Design
The frame is grade 5 titanium with a mirror-polished finish, in two colours: star white and night sky. Open, it is 164.6mm wide, 117.8mm tall and 5.2mm thick; closed, 84.1mm wide and 11.3mm thick. It weighs 254g, rated IP68 to six metres for 30 minutes, and ships with iOS 27. The 5.2mm open thickness is the thinnest of any Apple device, and the closed 11.3mm is close to the Galaxy Z Fold8.

On paper they are closer than the £300 gap suggests: near-identical screen sizes, two rear cameras each, side-button fingerprint unlock on both. The real difference is the platform. If you live in iOS the Duo is the only option; if you do not, the Fold8 is cheaper, proven and available today.
What the rumours got wrong
- The name. iPhone Fold and iPhone Ultra were both wrong. It is the iPhone Duo.
- The on-sale date. Reported as 18 September alongside the Pro models, or December. It is 23 October.
- Screen sizes. Reported as 5.5in and 7.8in; they are 5.4in and 7.6in.
- The crease. The under-0.15mm claim was from suppliers. Apple has published no figure.
- Battery capacity. Still unpublished; the 4,700mAh to 5,800mAh range was guesswork and remains so.
What the reporting got right: the price at £1,999, Touch ID in place of Face ID, the A20 Pro chip, two 48MP rear cameras with no telephoto, the titanium frame and the book-style shape.
Should you wait for it?
If you are not tied to iOS, the case for waiting is weak. The Galaxy Z Fold8 is on sale now at £1,699, it is Samsung's eighth attempt at the format, and UK network contracts on it are well established. A first-generation folding phone from any manufacturer carries risk, and Apple gets no exemption from that.
If you are committed to iOS, the wait is six weeks and the phone is fully specified, so there is nothing to decide until reviews land in the week of 23 October. What we would not do is buy an iPhone 18 Pro Max in September with the intention of switching to the Duo in October: you would take the depreciation on a phone you owned for five weeks.
