About the Xiaomi Poco M5
The Poco M5 is a no-frills 4G budget phone from 2022, and its appeal today is almost entirely practical. The Helio G99 chip keeps apps opening and scrolling smoothly enough for messaging, social media and streaming, which is not a given at this level, and GSMArena rated its battery endurance as excellent. It also keeps the extras that newer cheap phones keep dropping: a 3.5mm headphone jack, a dedicated microSD slot, NFC for contactless payments, an infrared blaster and FM radio. The compromises are just as clear. The 6.58-inch 90Hz LCD is sharp but dim outdoors, the 50MP main camera is fine in daylight and weak in low light, the 5MP selfie camera is basic, and 18W charging is slow for a 5,000mAh battery. At 201g it is also on the heavy side. It launched on Android 12 and was updated to Android 14 with HyperOS, but Xiaomi has since added it to its official end-of-support list, so there are no more security patches. It makes most sense as a spare, a first phone for a child or a basic work handset.

Is the Xiaomi Poco M5 worth buying?
Only as a cheap, basic phone. Battery life is excellent, everyday performance is dependable and it keeps a headphone jack, microSD slot and NFC, but the screen is dim outdoors, the cameras are basic, it is 4G only and Xiaomi no longer provides security updates. For a main phone you plan to keep, a current model such as the Poco M8 is a better investment.
Does the Xiaomi Poco M5 have 5G?
No. The Poco M5 uses the MediaTek Helio G99, which has no 5G modem, so it runs on 4G only. It is effectively the 4G twin of the Poco M4 5G, which pairs very similar hardware with a 5G-capable Dimensity 700.
Does the Xiaomi Poco M5 still get software updates?
No. It launched in 2022 on Android 12 with MIUI 13 and was updated as far as Android 14 with HyperOS, but Xiaomi has since put the Poco M5 on its official end-of-support list. That means no new Android versions and no further security patches.
How long does the Xiaomi Poco M5 battery last?
Battery life is its strongest point. The 5,000mAh cell and the efficient 6nm Helio G99 earned an excellent endurance rating in GSMArena's testing, so a full day of typical use is comfortable. Charging is the weak spot at 18W, so a full top-up takes a while.
How good is the Xiaomi Poco M5 camera?
It is adequate in daylight and weak in the dark. The 50MP main camera produces decent daytime photos and video, while the 2MP macro and 2MP depth sensors add little. Low-light shots and the 5MP selfie camera are unimpressive, and video tops out at 1080p at 30fps.
Should I buy the Xiaomi Poco M5 or the Poco M8?
The Poco M8 is a big step forward: it adds 5G, a much faster Snapdragon 6 Gen 3, a far brighter 6.77-inch 120Hz AMOLED screen, a 5,520mAh battery with 45W charging, IP65 dust and water resistance on European models and a launch promise of up to four major Android updates. It is also lighter at 178g against 201g. The Poco M5's remaining advantages are a 3.5mm headphone jack and a microSD slot that does not share space with the second SIM, so choose it only if price is everything.
