About the Xiaomi Poco F3

The Poco F3 built its reputation on one decision: putting the Snapdragon 870 - effectively a tuned version of the previous year's flagship chip - into a mid-range body. The result was a phone that outran everything near its price for gaming and general responsiveness, and five years on it still handles day-to-day apps without complaint. The 6.67-inch AMOLED helps enormously, with a 120Hz refresh rate, HDR10+ support and stereo speakers that make it a better video and gaming device than the category norm. Xiaomi made the savings elsewhere and was fairly open about it. There is no optical stabilisation on the 48MP main camera, so low-light photos and handheld video are the weak point, and the 8MP ultrawide and 5MP macro are there to pad the spec sheet more than to be used. There is no water resistance rating and no microSD slot, so pick your storage carefully at purchase. Anyone who wants smooth performance and a good screen far more than they want camera quality will still find this an easy phone to live with.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Poco F3 worth buying?
The Poco F3 is worth buying if performance per pound is your priority. The Snapdragon 870 still runs modern games and apps smoothly and the 120Hz AMOLED screen is excellent, but the camera lacks optical stabilisation and the phone is now past its software support window.
Is the Poco F3 good for gaming?
Yes, gaming is its strongest suit. The Snapdragon 870 with Adreno 650 graphics was flagship-class in 2021 and remains capable, and the 120Hz AMOLED panel plus stereo speakers make games look and sound better than most phones in this bracket.
Does the Poco F3 have a headphone jack or microSD slot?
No to both. The Poco F3 drops the 3.5mm headphone jack in favour of USB-C and Bluetooth audio, and there is no microSD expansion, so choose between the 128GB and 256GB versions carefully. It does keep an infrared blaster for controlling TVs and air conditioning units.
Is the Poco F3 camera good?
It is adequate rather than good. The 48MP main sensor produces sharp daylight shots but has no optical stabilisation, so night photos and handheld video are noticeably softer than on rivals that include OIS. The 8MP ultrawide is usable in bright light and the 5MP macro is a novelty.
Is the Poco F3 waterproof?
No. The Poco F3 has no official IP rating for dust or water resistance, so it should be kept away from rain and spills. Its successor, the Poco F4, added a basic IP53 splash-resistance rating.
How does the Poco F3 compare to the Poco F4?
Both use the same Snapdragon 870 chip and a 6.67-inch 120Hz AMOLED display, so raw speed is effectively identical. The Poco F4 upgrades the main camera to 64MP with optical stabilisation, doubles charging speed to 67W and adds IP53 splash resistance.
