About the Samsung Galaxy S20

The standard Galaxy S20 is the one member of its family that still makes sense to pick up, largely because it got the sensible end of every decision Samsung made in 2020. At 6.2 inches and 163g it is genuinely compact by flagship standards, which is increasingly rare, and it shares the same 120Hz Dynamic AMOLED 2X panel as its far bigger and heavier siblings. The camera skips the 108MP experiment of the Ultra in favour of a more predictable 12MP main sensor, and the results are more consistent for it, though the 3x hybrid zoom is the weak point and detail falls away quickly beyond that. In the UK it runs the Exynos 990, which was the less efficient of the two chips Samsung used that year and shows up as middling battery life from the 4,000mAh cell. It keeps the microSD slot Samsung later abandoned. The significant caveat is software: Samsung's update commitment for the S20 line has expired, so it no longer receives Android upgrades or security patches.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Samsung Galaxy S20 worth buying in 2026?
Only with clear eyes about its age. It is one of the last genuinely compact Android flagships with a 120Hz screen, and the 12MP camera is still dependable in good light. But Samsung has ended security updates for the S20 series, and battery life from the 4,000mAh cell was never a strong point on the UK Exynos model.
How long does the Samsung Galaxy S20 receive software updates?
Samsung committed to three Android version upgrades and four years of security updates, which took the S20 to Android 13 with One UI 5. That support window has now closed, so no further Android versions or security patches are being issued for the phone.
Does the Samsung Galaxy S20 have a headphone jack and expandable storage?
There is no 3.5mm headphone jack, so you will need USB-C or wireless headphones. It does have a microSD slot supporting cards up to 1TB, which is useful given the S20 shipped with 128GB of internal storage and no larger option in the UK.
Is the Samsung Galaxy S20 camera good?
It is solid rather than spectacular. The 12MP main sensor and 12MP ultrawide produce natural, consistent shots in daylight and hold up reasonably in low light. The 64MP telephoto is used for 3x hybrid zoom rather than true optical zoom, so image quality drops off noticeably as you push past that.
What is the difference between the Samsung Galaxy S20 and the Galaxy S20+?
The core hardware is the same, including the chipset, 120Hz display technology and main camera trio. The S20+ gives you a larger 6.7-inch screen, a bigger 4,500mAh battery, an extra time-of-flight depth sensor and storage options above 128GB, at the cost of an extra 23g of weight and a size that is harder to use one-handed.
Does the Samsung Galaxy S20 support 5G in the UK?
Most UK Galaxy S20 units are 5G models and work on all UK 5G networks. A 4G-only variant was sold in some markets, so it is worth confirming the exact model before buying second-hand or refurbished if 5G matters to you.

Based on main-sensor size (1-inch / 1/1.3" beats 1/2.0"), telephoto reach (periscope > 5x > 3x optical), image processing tier (Apple Pro, Pixel Pro, Galaxy Ultra, Honor Magic Pro, Xiaomi Ultra), pro video features (ProRes, Apple Log, Dolby Vision), camera-partnership branding (Leica, Hasselblad, Zeiss) and OIS. Older flagships are de-rated since image processing pipelines have advanced significantly each generation. Megapixel count is deliberately downweighted — it correlates poorly with real-world camera quality.

Based on battery capacity (mAh) adjusted for platform efficiency calibrated against NotebookCheck, Tom's Guide, GSMArena and CNET reviewer tests. Apple A-series gets +45% (iOS process freezing + LTPO 1Hz + tuned panels make iPhone Pro Max outlast many 6500+ mAh Android phones in measured tests). Top Snapdragon / Dimensity flagships get +15%, budget chipsets are penalised −15% to −25% to reflect less efficient displays and looser background limits. Charging speed is excluded — see the separate Fast charging tag for that.
