About the Samsung Galaxy Note20

The Galaxy Note20 is the cheaper way into Samsung's final Note generation, and how much you like it depends entirely on which compromises you notice. The S Pen is here and it works well, with latency cut to 26ms, and the 6.7-inch screen is large enough for note-taking and split-screen work. But Samsung made choices on this model it did not make on the Ultra: the display is a flat 1080p panel locked at 60Hz rather than the Ultra's 120Hz QHD+, the back is polycarbonate instead of glass, and there is no microSD slot. The camera pairing of a 12MP main sensor with a 64MP 3x telephoto is capable in daylight and reaches 30x hybrid zoom, though it sits clearly below the Ultra's periscope system. Software support has ended, with the last update landing on Android 13 and One UI 5.1, so no further security patches will arrive. The plastic back is less of a problem in daily use than reviewers suggested at launch, but the 60Hz screen is the one thing you cannot unsee once you have used a faster panel.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Samsung Galaxy Note20 worth buying?
It is worth buying if you want a built-in S Pen without the Ultra's size and weight, and you can live with a 60Hz screen. It keeps the essentials including IP68 protection, wireless charging and 25W wired charging. The main drawbacks are the ended software support, the lack of a microSD slot and the polycarbonate back.
Does the Samsung Galaxy Note20 have a 120Hz display?
No. The Galaxy Note20 uses a 6.7-inch Super AMOLED Plus panel at 2400x1080 with a standard 60Hz refresh rate. Only the Galaxy Note20 Ultra received the 120Hz adaptive QHD+ display, which is the single biggest difference between the two.
Does the Samsung Galaxy Note20 have expandable storage?
No. Samsung removed the microSD slot from the standard Note20, so you are fixed at the 128GB or 256GB you buy. The Galaxy Note20 Ultra retained microSDXC support up to 1TB if expandable storage is essential to you.
Is the Samsung Galaxy Note20 camera good?
It is good in daylight and average after dark. The setup combines a 12MP main camera, a 64MP 3x telephoto that also drives 30x hybrid zoom, and a 12MP ultrawide, with a 10MP selfie camera capable of 4K video. It is a step behind the Ultra's 108MP main sensor and 5x periscope.
How long will the Samsung Galaxy Note20 receive updates?
It will not receive any more. Samsung supplied three Android version upgrades, ending at Android 13 with One UI 5.1, plus four years of security updates that have now expired. The phone remains usable but is no longer patched.
Is the Samsung Galaxy Note20 plastic?
The back panel is polycarbonate rather than glass, with an aluminium frame and Gorilla Glass 5 over the display. In practice it feels less premium than the Ultra but is more forgiving of drops, and it still carries a full IP68 water and dust resistance rating.
