About the Samsung Galaxy J5 (2017)

The Samsung Galaxy J5 (2017) was Samsung's budget workhorse of the late 2010s, and its appeal was simple: a Super AMOLED screen and a metal body at a level where rivals were still selling plastic phones with washed-out LCDs. The 5.2-inch display is only 720p, but AMOLED contrast means it looks far better than the resolution suggests, and at 146mm tall it is genuinely pocketable in a way almost nothing on sale today is. Samsung also gave it a 13MP front camera with its own LED flash, which was aimed squarely at selfie-focused buyers and still works well for video calls. Nearly a decade on, this is a used-market phone for very light use only. Two gigabytes of RAM and the entry-level Exynos 7870 mean modern apps are slow to open and multitasking is limited, and the 3,000mAh battery will have aged. Software finished on Android 9 Pie, so there are no security patches and some newer apps will refuse to install. It works as a spare, a travel phone or a first handset, not as a daily driver.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Samsung Galaxy J5 (2017) worth buying?
Only as a very cheap spare, travel or first phone. The Super AMOLED screen and metal build are better than you would expect, but 2GB of RAM makes modern apps sluggish and the phone stopped receiving updates on Android 9 Pie. For anything resembling daily use, a current entry-level Galaxy A model is a far better bet.
Does the Samsung Galaxy J5 (2017) have a headphone jack and microSD slot?
Yes to both. There is a 3.5mm headphone jack and a dedicated microSD slot that takes cards up to 256GB, which matters a lot given the base model only has 16GB of internal storage.
Will the Samsung Galaxy J5 (2017) get any more Android updates?
No. It launched on Android 7.0 Nougat and its final upgrade was Android 9 Pie with One UI 1.1. Security patches ended years ago, so avoid using it for banking or anything sensitive.
Is the Samsung Galaxy J5 (2017) camera good?
It is basic but usable in good light. Both the rear and front cameras are 13MP, and unusually for a budget phone the selfie camera has its own LED flash for dim rooms. Video maxes out at 1080p and low-light photos are soft.
Does the Samsung Galaxy J5 (2017) support 5G?
No. It is a 4G LTE phone, which is fine for calls, messaging and everyday browsing on any UK network. Bear in mind that operators are steadily switching off 3G, so 4G coverage is what you will be relying on.
How big is the Samsung Galaxy J5 (2017)?
It measures 146.2 x 71.3 x 8mm and weighs 160g, with a 5.2-inch screen. That makes it one of the last genuinely small Samsung phones, comfortably usable in one hand and easy to slip into a jacket pocket.
