About the Samsung Galaxy A22

The Galaxy A22 was Samsung's attempt to put a proper Super AMOLED panel into one of its cheapest phones, and that decision still defines it. Colours pop, blacks are genuinely black and the 90Hz refresh rate makes scrolling feel smoother than the modest Helio G80 chip underneath deserves. The trade-off is resolution: the screen is only 720p, so text is noticeably softer than on the 5G version of the same phone. Performance is fine for messaging, social apps and streaming, less so for anything graphically demanding. Battery life is the other draw, with the 5,000mAh cell comfortably clearing a day and often stretching further. Samsung also kept the 3.5mm headphone jack and microSD slot, and delivered two Android upgrades that took it to Android 13 before support ended. The 48MP camera is dependable in daylight and ordinary once the light drops. It is a 4G-only phone, which is the biggest thing to weigh up now. As a cheap, well-made Samsung with a lovely screen and long battery life, it holds up; as a phone to keep for years, it does not.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Samsung Galaxy A22 worth buying?
The Galaxy A22 is worth buying if you want a cheap Samsung with a Super AMOLED screen and all-day battery life. It is held back by a 720p resolution, a modest Helio G80 chip and 4G-only connectivity, and its software support has ended. For basic use it remains a solid, well-built handset.
Does the Samsung Galaxy A22 have 5G?
No, the standard Galaxy A22 is 4G only. Samsung sold a separate Galaxy A22 5G with a MediaTek Dimensity 700 chip and a larger 6.6-inch LCD screen if 5G matters to you. The two phones share a name but have different displays, chips and cameras.
Does the Samsung Galaxy A22 have a headphone jack and microSD slot?
Yes to both. The Galaxy A22 keeps a 3.5mm headphone jack for wired earphones and a microSD card slot for expanding the 64GB or 128GB of built-in storage. That combination is increasingly hard to find on newer phones at any price.
How long will the Samsung Galaxy A22 receive updates?
It no longer receives them. The A22 launched on Android 11 with One UI 3.1 and received two major Android upgrades, reaching Android 13 with One UI 5, before its support window closed. It will not get further security patches, which is worth considering for banking apps.
Is the Samsung Galaxy A22 camera good?
The 48MP main camera produces respectable, well-processed shots in daylight, backed by an 8MP ultrawide and 2MP macro and depth sensors that add little. Low-light photos are soft and noisy. The 13MP front camera is fine for video calls and casual selfies.
Should I get the Samsung Galaxy A22 or the Galaxy A22 5G?
The 4G Galaxy A22 has the better screen, a sharper-looking 6.4-inch Super AMOLED panel, and it is lighter and easier to hold at 186g. The Galaxy A22 5G gives you 5G, a faster Dimensity 700 chip and a higher-resolution 6.6-inch display, but it uses an LCD panel and weighs 203g. Pick the 4G model for screen quality and comfort, the 5G model for future-proofing and speed.

Based on main-sensor size (1-inch / 1/1.3" beats 1/2.0"), telephoto reach (periscope > 5x > 3x optical), image processing tier (Apple Pro, Pixel Pro, Galaxy Ultra, Honor Magic Pro, Xiaomi Ultra), pro video features (ProRes, Apple Log, Dolby Vision), camera-partnership branding (Leica, Hasselblad, Zeiss) and OIS. Older flagships are de-rated since image processing pipelines have advanced significantly each generation. Megapixel count is deliberately downweighted — it correlates poorly with real-world camera quality.

Based on battery capacity (mAh) adjusted for platform efficiency calibrated against NotebookCheck, Tom's Guide, GSMArena and CNET reviewer tests. Apple A-series gets +45% (iOS process freezing + LTPO 1Hz + tuned panels make iPhone Pro Max outlast many 6500+ mAh Android phones in measured tests). Top Snapdragon / Dimensity flagships get +15%, budget chipsets are penalised −15% to −25% to reflect less efficient displays and looser background limits. Charging speed is excluded — see the separate Fast charging tag for that.
