About the Samsung Galaxy A12

The Galaxy A12 was Samsung's entry-level workhorse from late 2020, and it sold in enormous numbers for a simple reason: it covered the basics and the battery lasted. The 5,000mAh cell will still carry most people through two days of light use, and the 6.5-inch screen is large enough for video and browsing. The compromises sit exactly where you would expect. The display is only HD+ and runs at 60Hz, so it looks soft and less fluid alongside newer budget phones, and the MediaTek Helio P35 was modest when new and now labours with anything demanding. The 48MP main camera is respectable in daylight and unremarkable indoors, while the pair of 2MP macro and depth sensors add very little. What it does keep, and what newer phones increasingly drop, is a 3.5mm headphone jack and a microSD slot, so you can add storage cheaply and use wired earphones. Samsung's software support for it has now ended, which matters most if you handle banking or work email on your phone. It works as a spare or a first phone for a child, but it is not one to keep for years.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Samsung Galaxy A12 worth buying?
The Galaxy A12 is only worth buying now as a cheap spare, a first phone for a child, or a device for calls, messaging and basic apps. Its 5,000mAh battery and headphone jack are genuine strengths, but the Helio P35 chip and HD+ 60Hz screen feel dated, and Samsung no longer issues security updates for it. Anyone wanting a main phone should look at a newer budget model.
Does the Samsung Galaxy A12 have a headphone jack?
Yes. The Galaxy A12 includes a 3.5mm headphone jack, so wired earphones work without an adapter or dongle. It also has a USB-C port for charging, and Bluetooth 5.0 if you prefer wireless earbuds.
Can you expand the storage on the Samsung Galaxy A12?
Yes. The Galaxy A12 has a dedicated microSD slot supporting cards up to 1TB, which is useful because the base models ship with only 32GB or 64GB of internal storage. Adding a card is the cheapest way to make one of the smaller variants usable for photos and offline media.
Is the Samsung Galaxy A12 camera good?
The Galaxy A12's 48MP main camera takes acceptable photos in good daylight but softens noticeably indoors and after dark. The 5MP ultrawide is usable for landscapes, while the two 2MP macro and depth sensors contribute little in practice. Video is capped at 1080p at 30fps, so there is no 4K recording.
How does the Samsung Galaxy A12 compare to the Galaxy A13?
The Galaxy A13 is the more sensible buy of the two. It upgrades to a sharper 6.6-inch Full HD+ screen against the A12's HD+ panel, moves to a 50MP main camera, adds Gorilla Glass 5 protection and uses Samsung's own Exynos 850. Battery capacity and 15W charging are unchanged at 5,000mAh.
Does the Samsung Galaxy A12 still receive security updates?
No. Samsung's update commitment for the Galaxy A12 has now ended, so it no longer receives Android version upgrades or monthly security patches. That is the strongest reason to avoid using one for banking, work email or anything else where an unpatched phone is a real risk.

Based on main-sensor size (1-inch / 1/1.3" beats 1/2.0"), telephoto reach (periscope > 5x > 3x optical), image processing tier (Apple Pro, Pixel Pro, Galaxy Ultra, Honor Magic Pro, Xiaomi Ultra), pro video features (ProRes, Apple Log, Dolby Vision), camera-partnership branding (Leica, Hasselblad, Zeiss) and OIS. Older flagships are de-rated since image processing pipelines have advanced significantly each generation. Megapixel count is deliberately downweighted — it correlates poorly with real-world camera quality.

Based on battery capacity (mAh) adjusted for platform efficiency calibrated against NotebookCheck, Tom's Guide, GSMArena and CNET reviewer tests. Apple A-series gets +45% (iOS process freezing + LTPO 1Hz + tuned panels make iPhone Pro Max outlast many 6500+ mAh Android phones in measured tests). Top Snapdragon / Dimensity flagships get +15%, budget chipsets are penalised −15% to −25% to reflect less efficient displays and looser background limits. Charging speed is excluded — see the separate Fast charging tag for that.
