The Oppo A77 was built to a simple brief: put 5G and a big battery into a phone that sits at the affordable end of the market, and accept the compromises that follow. Its MediaTek Dimensity 810 handles messaging, streaming and social apps without drama, and the 5,000mAh battery is the real selling point, comfortably clearing a day and refilling quickly thanks to 33W SuperVOOC charging that is unusually generous for this bracket. Where Oppo saved money is the display. The 6.56-inch panel runs at a smooth 90Hz but only at 720p resolution, so text and images look noticeably softer than on a Full HD rival, and it is an LCD rather than an OLED. The 48MP main camera does respectable work in daylight and the secondary lens is a depth sensor rather than a genuine ultrawide, so there is no wider field of view to fall back on. There is no microSD slot either, so choose your storage carefully. Four years on, its update window has closed.
