About the OnePlus 9

The OnePlus 9 was the cheaper half of OnePlus's 2021 flagship pair, and it is now one of the more sensible ways into Snapdragon 888 performance on the refurbished market. It kept the things that matter day to day: a 120Hz Fluid AMOLED panel that still feels quick, Warp Charge 65T that refills the 4,500mAh battery in around half an hour, and a 50MP ultrawide co-developed with Sony that is genuinely better than the throwaway secondary lenses fitted to most phones at this level. The Hasselblad colour tuning was more marketing than substance at launch, though later software updates tightened it up. The compromises are worth knowing. The plastic frame feels a clear step below the 9 Pro, there is no telephoto lens at all, and the UK unlocked model carries no official IP water resistance rating even though the hardware is otherwise the same as the certified US carrier version. OnePlus has also finished supporting it, so it will not receive further Android versions or security patches. Buy it for speed and screen quality, not for longevity.

Frequently asked questions

Is the OnePlus 9 worth buying?
The OnePlus 9 is worth considering as a refurbished buy if you want flagship-grade speed, a 120Hz AMOLED screen and very fast charging without paying current flagship money. The catch is that it no longer receives Android updates or security patches, and it has no telephoto camera. If ongoing software support matters to you, a newer mid-ranger is the safer choice.
Does the OnePlus 9 have wireless charging?
Yes, the OnePlus 9 supports 15W wireless charging, which was unusual for a non-Pro OnePlus phone at the time. Wired charging is far quicker at 65W via Warp Charge 65T, taking the 4,500mAh battery from flat to full in roughly 30 minutes. The OnePlus 9 Pro is the one to pick if you want faster 50W wireless charging.
Is the OnePlus 9 waterproof?
The UK unlocked OnePlus 9 has no official IP water or dust resistance rating. OnePlus confirmed the hardware is physically identical to the US carrier version that was certified IP68, but without the rating there is no warranty cover for water damage. Treat it as splash-tolerant rather than waterproof.
How long will the OnePlus 9 receive software updates?
It will not receive any more. The OnePlus 9 shipped with OxygenOS 11 on Android 11 and OnePlus eventually took the 9 series as far as Android 14, but the phone has since dropped off the update list. That means no new Android versions and no further monthly security patches.
Is the OnePlus 9 camera good?
The OnePlus 9 takes solid photos in good light from its 48MP main sensor, and the 50MP Sony IMX766 ultrawide is one of the best ultrawide cameras fitted to a 2021 phone, with noticeably less edge distortion than most. The weak points are the absence of any telephoto lens, so zoom is purely digital, and low-light shots that lag behind rival flagships of the era.
Should I get the OnePlus 9 or the OnePlus 9 Pro?
Both share the Snapdragon 888, the same 4,500mAh battery and 65W wired charging, so everyday speed feels near identical. The 9 Pro adds a sharper 6.7-inch LTPO QHD+ display, an 8MP telephoto for real optical zoom, 50W wireless charging and an IP68 rating that the standard 9 lacks in the UK. Pick the 9 Pro if zoom photography or water resistance matter, otherwise the standard 9 covers the same ground. Compare OnePlus 9 Pro deals.
