About the Google Pixel Fold

The Google Pixel Fold was Google's first attempt at a book-style foldable, and in 2026 it is best understood as a first-generation device with the trade-offs that implies. Unfolded, the 7.6-inch internal display is genuinely excellent for reading, browsing side by side apps, and watching video, while the 5.8-inch cover screen is usable one-handed without feeling cramped. The triple rear camera, including a 5x periscope telephoto, was unusually capable for a folding phone at launch and still holds up for everyday photography. Where it shows its age is the Tensor G2 chipset, now several generations behind, and a battery that struggles to comfortably clear a full day of heavy folding-screen use. It is also noticeably heavier and thicker than the folding phones Google sells today. Software support has now run its course, so this is a phone for buyers who want the foldable format at a lower entry cost and are comfortable running on an older chipset without future OS upgrades. Anyone wanting current performance and longer support should look at the newer Pixel Pro Fold generation instead.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Google Pixel Fold worth buying in 2026?
Only as a budget route into the folding phone format. The screens and cameras still perform well, but the Tensor G2 chip is dated and software updates have ended, so it is best suited to buyers prioritising a low price over long-term support.
Does the Google Pixel Fold have wireless charging?
The Pixel Fold charges over USB-C at up to 30W wired speed. Google did not include wireless charging on this first-generation model, which was later added back on subsequent Pixel Fold models.
How good is the Google Pixel Fold camera?
It is a strong camera for a foldable, built around a 48MP main sensor, a 10.8MP ultrawide, and a 10.8MP 5x periscope telephoto lens. Photo quality is close to what you would get from a mainstream Pixel of the same generation, which was a rarity among early folding phones.
Is the Google Pixel Fold still getting software updates?
No. The Pixel Fold launched with a commitment of three years of OS upgrades and five years of security patches from its 2023 release, and that support window has now closed. Buyers should treat it as a phone that will not receive further Android version upgrades.
Is the Google Pixel Fold durable and water resistant?
It carries an IPX8 water resistance rating, meaning it can survive submersion in fresh water, which was notable for a folding phone at launch. There is no official dust resistance (IP6X) rating, so it should still be kept away from sand and dust.
How does the Google Pixel Fold compare to the Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold?
The Pixel 9 Pro Fold has a larger, brighter internal display, a slimmer and lighter body, an improved camera with a higher-resolution ultrawide lens, and a much newer Tensor G4 chipset with a longer remaining update window. It is the better buy for anyone who is not specifically shopping on price. Compare Pixel 9 Pro Fold deals.

Based on main-sensor size (1-inch / 1/1.3" beats 1/2.0"), telephoto reach (periscope > 5x > 3x optical), image processing tier (Apple Pro, Pixel Pro, Galaxy Ultra, Honor Magic Pro, Xiaomi Ultra), pro video features (ProRes, Apple Log, Dolby Vision), camera-partnership branding (Leica, Hasselblad, Zeiss) and OIS. Older flagships are de-rated since image processing pipelines have advanced significantly each generation. Megapixel count is deliberately downweighted — it correlates poorly with real-world camera quality.

Based on battery capacity (mAh) adjusted for platform efficiency calibrated against NotebookCheck, Tom's Guide, GSMArena and CNET reviewer tests. Apple A-series gets +45% (iOS process freezing + LTPO 1Hz + tuned panels make iPhone Pro Max outlast many 6500+ mAh Android phones in measured tests). Top Snapdragon / Dimensity flagships get +15%, budget chipsets are penalised −15% to −25% to reflect less efficient displays and looser background limits. Charging speed is excluded — see the separate Fast charging tag for that.
