About the Apple iPhone 7 Plus

The iPhone 7 Plus was Apple's first phone with a dual camera, pairing a wide lens with a 2x optical telephoto for the sort of zoomed-in shots the standard iPhone 7 simply could not manage. Nearly a decade on, it sits firmly in legacy territory: Apple stopped issuing new iOS versions for it after iOS 15, and there is no 5G, no Face ID, and no wireless charging. What it still offers is a genuinely solid build, a bright 5.5-inch LCD screen, and the Home button and 3.5mm-free (but Lightning-equipped) design that a lot of people still find easy to live with. On the UK market today it shows up almost exclusively as a refurbished or used handset, usually on SIM-free or PAYG deals rather than fresh contracts. It makes sense as a cheap backup phone, a first phone for a child, or a stopgap while saving for something newer, but anyone relying on their phone daily should be aware that banking apps and other software are increasingly dropping support for iOS 15 devices. Buy refurbished from a reputable seller with a battery health check, since batteries this old are the most likely point of failure.

Frequently asked questions

Is the iPhone 7 Plus worth buying in 2026?
Only as a very cheap secondary or backup phone, and only refurbished with a verified battery health rating. It cannot run iOS 16 or later, so newer apps and banking services are steadily dropping support, and Apple's own security patches for iOS 15 are expected to end around September 2026.
Does the iPhone 7 Plus support 5G?
No. The iPhone 7 Plus only supports 4G LTE, as 5G networks did not exist when it launched in 2016. If 5G matters to you, you would need an iPhone 12 or later.
Does the iPhone 7 Plus have wireless charging?
No. Wireless charging was not introduced to the iPhone line until the iPhone 8 and iPhone X the following year. The iPhone 7 Plus charges only via its Lightning port.
What is the latest iOS version the iPhone 7 Plus can run?
The iPhone 7 Plus is capped at iOS 15.7.9. It cannot be updated to iOS 16 or iOS 17, both of which require a more powerful chip than the A10 Fusion inside it.
Is the iPhone 7 Plus camera still good?
For a phone this old, yes. The dual 12MP wide and telephoto cameras were groundbreaking at launch and still take decent daylight photos with a genuine 2x optical zoom, though low-light performance and video quality are well behind any current phone.
How does the iPhone 7 Plus compare to the iPhone 7?
The iPhone 7 Plus has a larger 5.5-inch display versus the iPhone 7's 4.7 inches, a bigger 2,900mAh battery, and the second telephoto camera lens that the standard iPhone 7 lacks entirely. It is also noticeably heavier and larger in the hand. Compare iPhone 7 deals.

Based on main-sensor size (1-inch / 1/1.3" beats 1/2.0"), telephoto reach (periscope > 5x > 3x optical), image processing tier (Apple Pro, Pixel Pro, Galaxy Ultra, Honor Magic Pro, Xiaomi Ultra), pro video features (ProRes, Apple Log, Dolby Vision), camera-partnership branding (Leica, Hasselblad, Zeiss) and OIS. Older flagships are de-rated since image processing pipelines have advanced significantly each generation. Megapixel count is deliberately downweighted — it correlates poorly with real-world camera quality.

Based on battery capacity (mAh) adjusted for platform efficiency calibrated against NotebookCheck, Tom's Guide, GSMArena and CNET reviewer tests. Apple A-series gets +45% (iOS process freezing + LTPO 1Hz + tuned panels make iPhone Pro Max outlast many 6500+ mAh Android phones in measured tests). Top Snapdragon / Dimensity flagships get +15%, budget chipsets are penalised −15% to −25% to reflect less efficient displays and looser background limits. Charging speed is excluded — see the separate Fast charging tag for that.
