About the Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 Pro 5G

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 Pro 5G is the Chinese-market name for the hardware Xiaomi sold elsewhere as the Mi 10i 5G, and it was one of the first phones to make a 120Hz screen, 5G and a 108MP sensor feel like ordinary mid-range features rather than a splurge. The Snapdragon 750G is the sensible heart of it, quick enough for messaging, video and undemanding games without the thermal drama of pricier chips. Xiaomi also kept the practical things: a microSD slot, an infrared blaster, stereo speakers and a big battery paired with 33W charging that gets it back to useful in well under an hour. The trade-offs are equally clear. It is a heavy, thick phone at 215g, the LCD panel cannot match the contrast of the OLEDs that soon became standard at this level, and the supporting ultrawide, macro and depth cameras add little. Because it launched in China in late 2020, UK buyers should treat it as an import and verify 5G band support. Its software has long since stopped receiving updates.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 Pro 5G worth buying?
It is worth considering only as a low-cost backup or secondary handset. Performance from the Snapdragon 750G is still adequate for everyday apps and the 120Hz screen holds up well, but the phone dates from late 2020 and no longer gets Android or security updates.
Is the Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 Pro 5G camera good?
The 108MP main camera produces detailed daylight photos for its class, but it struggles as light drops. The 8MP ultrawide is soft and the 2MP macro and 2MP depth sensors are largely padding, so you are really buying one capable lens.
How does the Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 Pro 5G compare to the Redmi Note 9 5G?
The Pro is the more capable phone: a larger 6.67-inch 120Hz display against the Note 9 5G's 6.53-inch panel, a 108MP quad camera instead of a 48MP triple setup, and 33W charging rather than 18W. The standard Note 9 5G is lighter at 199g and carries a slightly larger 5,000mAh battery.
Does the Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 Pro 5G have a headphone jack and microSD slot?
Yes to both. It keeps a 3.5mm headphone jack alongside stereo speakers, and supports microSD expansion up to 512GB on top of its 128GB or 256GB of internal storage.
Is the Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 Pro 5G waterproof?
No. It carries an IP53 rating, which covers dust and light splashes or drizzle only. It is not designed to survive being submerged, so keep it away from baths, pools and heavy rain.
How long will the Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 Pro 5G receive updates?
It will not receive any more. The phone launched on Android 10 with MIUI 12 and its Android version and security patch support both ended some years ago, which is the main reason to avoid it as a primary phone.

Based on main-sensor size (1-inch / 1/1.3" beats 1/2.0"), telephoto reach (periscope > 5x > 3x optical), image processing tier (Apple Pro, Pixel Pro, Galaxy Ultra, Honor Magic Pro, Xiaomi Ultra), pro video features (ProRes, Apple Log, Dolby Vision), camera-partnership branding (Leica, Hasselblad, Zeiss) and OIS. Older flagships are de-rated since image processing pipelines have advanced significantly each generation. Megapixel count is deliberately downweighted — it correlates poorly with real-world camera quality.

Based on battery capacity (mAh) adjusted for platform efficiency calibrated against NotebookCheck, Tom's Guide, GSMArena and CNET reviewer tests. Apple A-series gets +45% (iOS process freezing + LTPO 1Hz + tuned panels make iPhone Pro Max outlast many 6500+ mAh Android phones in measured tests). Top Snapdragon / Dimensity flagships get +15%, budget chipsets are penalised −15% to −25% to reflect less efficient displays and looser background limits. Charging speed is excluded — see the separate Fast charging tag for that.
