About the Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 5G
The Redmi Note 9 5G is the Chinese-market model Xiaomi launched in late 2020 to bring 5G to its cheapest Redmi Note, and it is worth knowing exactly what that means before buying one in the UK. The same MediaTek Dimensity 800U chip, 6.53-inch 1080p LCD, 5,000mAh battery and 48MP main camera were sold in Europe as the Redmi Note 9T, but the two are not identical. This Chinese model has an 8MP ultrawide camera the 9T lacks, yet it has no NFC for contactless payments and does not support 4G band 20, the 800MHz frequency UK networks use for indoor and rural coverage. The basics are sound for an old budget phone: the battery comfortably lasts a day, and there is a headphone jack, a dedicated microSD slot, stereo speakers and an infrared blaster. The screen is a standard LCD without a high refresh rate, charging is a slow 18W, and at 199g it is heavy. It launched on Android 10, and its European twin is already on Xiaomi's official end-of-support list. For a UK buyer it only makes sense as a cheap spare.
