About the Xiaomi Poco M6

The Poco M6 is about getting 5G into the hands of people spending as little as possible, and everything about it follows from that decision. The Dimensity 6100+ is a competent entry-level 5G chip, so the phone connects to modern UK networks and handles messaging, video and light apps without complaint, but it is not built for demanding games. The 6.74-inch screen is large and runs at 90Hz, which helps it feel responsive, though at 720p it looks soft and it is not especially bright outdoors. Poco has been generous with the practical details: a dedicated microSD slot that does not steal your second SIM, a 3.5mm headphone jack and a side-mounted fingerprint reader. The omissions matter, though. There is no NFC, so contactless payments with Google Wallet are off the table, the selfie camera is a basic 5MP unit, video is capped at 1080p and charging is a leisurely 18W. It is a phone for undemanding users who want 5G, a big battery and expandable storage rather than polish.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Poco M6 worth buying?
It is worth buying if your priority is cheap 5G with a big battery and expandable storage. The 720p screen, 5MP selfie camera, 18W charging and lack of NFC are significant compromises. Anyone who wants contactless payments or a sharper display should look at the Poco M6 Pro or step up a class.
Does the Poco M6 have NFC for contactless payments?
No. This model does not include NFC, so you cannot use Google Wallet or any tap-to-pay service on it. That is the single biggest thing to check before buying, because it cannot be added later.
Does the Poco M6 support 5G?
Yes. The MediaTek Dimensity 6100+ provides sub-6GHz 5G with support for band 78, which is the main 5G band used by UK networks. It is entry-level 5G rather than the fastest available, but it works on all four UK operators' 5G services.
Is the Poco M6 camera good?
It is basic. The 50MP main camera with autofocus produces acceptable daylight photos and there is a small auxiliary lens alongside it, but video is limited to 1080p at 30fps and the 5MP front camera is weak for selfies and video calls. Low-light results are poor.
Can you add a memory card to the Poco M6?
Yes, and unusually it uses a dedicated microSDXC slot, so you can run two nano-SIMs and a memory card at the same time. Built-in storage runs from 64GB to 256GB depending on the model, and there is a 3.5mm headphone jack too.
Should I buy the Poco M6 or the Poco M6 Pro?
The M6 Pro has the sharper screen, with a 6.79-inch Full HD+ panel against the M6's 720p display, plus a better 8MP selfie camera and an IP53 rating. The M6 counters with the dedicated microSD slot rather than a shared SIM tray. Both are 5G with 5,000mAh batteries and 18W charging, so the display is the deciding factor for most people.

Based on main-sensor size (1-inch / 1/1.3" beats 1/2.0"), telephoto reach (periscope > 5x > 3x optical), image processing tier (Apple Pro, Pixel Pro, Galaxy Ultra, Honor Magic Pro, Xiaomi Ultra), pro video features (ProRes, Apple Log, Dolby Vision), camera-partnership branding (Leica, Hasselblad, Zeiss) and OIS. Older flagships are de-rated since image processing pipelines have advanced significantly each generation. Megapixel count is deliberately downweighted — it correlates poorly with real-world camera quality.

Based on battery capacity (mAh) adjusted for platform efficiency calibrated against NotebookCheck, Tom's Guide, GSMArena and CNET reviewer tests. Apple A-series gets +45% (iOS process freezing + LTPO 1Hz + tuned panels make iPhone Pro Max outlast many 6500+ mAh Android phones in measured tests). Top Snapdragon / Dimensity flagships get +15%, budget chipsets are penalised −15% to −25% to reflect less efficient displays and looser background limits. Charging speed is excluded — see the separate Fast charging tag for that.
