About the Xiaomi Mi 11i

The Mi 11i was Xiaomi doing something the rest of the industry had stopped doing: putting a genuine flagship processor into a phone that undercut every flagship on the shelf. The Snapdragon 888 inside it was the same chip powering the era's most expensive Android phones, and paired with a 6.67-inch 120Hz AMOLED panel and UFS 3.1 storage it felt every bit as quick. What Xiaomi removed to hit the price is easy to spot once you know where to look. There is no wireless charging, no telephoto lens, no headphone jack and no microSD slot, the frame is plastic rather than metal, and the Snapdragon 888 runs hot enough that sustained gaming sessions throttle. The 108MP main camera takes detailed daylight shots but sits behind properly tuned flagship cameras once light drops, and the 5MP macro is a novelty. Software support has since ended, and MIUI was always divisive. Today it appeals to buyers who care about raw speed and screen quality far more than cameras or longevity.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Xiaomi Mi 11i worth buying?
It is worth it if you want flagship-level speed cheaply and can live with an older phone. The Snapdragon 888 and 120Hz AMOLED screen still feel fast, but official software support has ended, so there will be no further Android or security updates. Camera quality also lags behind similarly aged flagships.
Does the Xiaomi Mi 11i have wireless charging or a headphone jack?
No to both. The Mi 11i skips wireless charging and has no 3.5mm headphone jack, so you will need USB-C or Bluetooth headphones. It charges at 33W over USB-C instead, filling the 4,520mAh battery reasonably quickly.
Is the Xiaomi Mi 11i camera good?
The 108MP main camera captures a lot of detail in good light and is the only lens really worth using. The 8MP ultra-wide is serviceable and the 5MP macro is a gimmick, and there is no telephoto, so zoomed shots are digital crops. Night photography is the weakest area.
Does the Xiaomi Mi 11i overheat?
The Snapdragon 888 runs warm under sustained load, which is true of every phone using that chip. Everyday tasks are fine, but long gaming sessions or extended 4K recording will cause the phone to throttle performance to manage heat.
Does the Xiaomi Mi 11i support expandable storage?
No. There is no microSD card slot, so you are limited to the 128GB or 256GB of internal storage you buy. The storage is fast UFS 3.1, which helps with app loading and large file transfers.
Should I get the Xiaomi Mi 11i or the Xiaomi Mi 11 Lite?
The Mi 11i is far more powerful, with a Snapdragon 888, a 120Hz screen, a 108MP camera and 5G. The Mi 11 Lite is a very different proposition: much thinner and lighter at 157g, but 4G only and built around a mid-range Snapdragon 732G. Choose the 11i for speed, the Lite for portability.
