About the Xiaomi 17

The Xiaomi 17 is the rare flagship that stays compact without asking you to accept a smaller battery. Its 6.3-inch LTPO AMOLED is easy to handle, yet Xiaomi has fitted a very large cell behind it, which is the single most interesting thing about the phone. Everything else is properly flagship: Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 built on a 3nm process, up to 16GB of RAM, UFS 4.1 storage and a screen that peaks at 3,500 nits so it stays legible in any light. The camera setup is unusually consistent, with three 50MP sensors covering wide, telephoto and ultra-wide plus a 50MP front camera, so image quality does not fall off a cliff when you switch lenses. Charging is 100W wired and 50W wireless, and IP68 protection covers the usual spills and rain. It launched on Android 16 with HyperOS 3. If you have been holding out for a small phone that does not compromise on power or endurance, this is one of the very few options.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Xiaomi 17 worth buying?
Yes, if you want flagship performance in a phone you can comfortably use one-handed. The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, triple 50MP camera system and unusually large battery for a 6.3-inch handset are a strong combination. The main reservations are Xiaomi's HyperOS software, which ships with more preinstalled apps than most rivals, and the lack of a headphone jack or microSD slot.
How big is the Xiaomi 17 battery?
Xiaomi lists a 7,000mAh cell for the Chinese model, with European variants specified at 6,330mAh. Either figure is exceptionally large for a 6.3-inch phone, and it is paired with 100W wired and 50W wireless charging so top-ups are quick.
Is the Xiaomi 17 waterproof?
It carries an IP68 rating, which means it is dust-tight and can survive immersion in fresh water. Rain, spills and a drop in the sink are not a concern, though seawater and high-pressure jets should still be avoided.
How good is the Xiaomi 17 camera?
The Xiaomi 17 uses three 50MP rear cameras: a stabilised main sensor, a telephoto at roughly 2.6x and an ultra-wide covering about 102 degrees. Using the same resolution across all three keeps detail consistent when you switch between lenses, and the front camera is also 50MP with autofocus.
Does the Xiaomi 17 have wireless charging?
Yes. It supports 50W wireless charging as well as 100W wired charging over USB-C. There is no 3.5mm headphone jack and no microSD slot, so choose your storage tier carefully at 256GB or 512GB.
Should I upgrade from the Xiaomi 15 to the Xiaomi 17?
The Xiaomi 17 brings a much bigger battery, a brighter 3,500-nit screen, faster 100W wired charging and the newer Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chip. The Xiaomi 15 remains a very capable compact flagship with a similar triple 50MP camera layout and the same 50W wireless charging, so the upgrade is mainly about endurance and charging speed rather than photography.

Based on main-sensor size (1-inch / 1/1.3" beats 1/2.0"), telephoto reach (periscope > 5x > 3x optical), image processing tier (Apple Pro, Pixel Pro, Galaxy Ultra, Honor Magic Pro, Xiaomi Ultra), pro video features (ProRes, Apple Log, Dolby Vision), camera-partnership branding (Leica, Hasselblad, Zeiss) and OIS. Older flagships are de-rated since image processing pipelines have advanced significantly each generation. Megapixel count is deliberately downweighted — it correlates poorly with real-world camera quality.

Based on battery capacity (mAh) adjusted for platform efficiency calibrated against NotebookCheck, Tom's Guide, GSMArena and CNET reviewer tests. Apple A-series gets +45% (iOS process freezing + LTPO 1Hz + tuned panels make iPhone Pro Max outlast many 6500+ mAh Android phones in measured tests). Top Snapdragon / Dimensity flagships get +15%, budget chipsets are penalised −15% to −25% to reflect less efficient displays and looser background limits. Charging speed is excluded — see the separate Fast charging tag for that.
