The TCL 406 is an entry-level 4G handset from early 2023, and it is honest about what it is: a large, simple phone for people who mainly call, message, browse and watch a bit of video. TCL's NXTVISION processing does a reasonable job of lifting colour and contrast on the 6.6-inch HD+ LCD, and there is a low blue light mode plus a greyscale reading mode aimed at people who stare at their phone late at night. The big 5,000mAh battery is the real draw, since a modest HD screen and undemanding hardware mean it comfortably stretches beyond a single day. The trade-offs are the ones you would expect at this level: charging is slow, the dual camera is fine in daylight and struggles after dark, and there is no 5G, so this is a phone for 4G coverage only. Practical touches survive that many pricier phones have dropped, including a dedicated microSD slot, a 3.5mm headphone jack, FM radio and stereo speakers.
