About the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3 5G

The Galaxy Z Fold3 5G was the generation where Samsung's book-style foldable stopped feeling like an experiment. It was the first Fold to be water resistant, the first to work with the S Pen, and the first to hide its inner selfie camera under the display so the 7.6-inch screen opens out uninterrupted. Unfolded it is closer to a small tablet than a phone, which makes it genuinely useful for reading documents, running two apps side by side, or watching something without squinting, and the 6.2-inch cover screen is narrow but perfectly usable one-handed. The costs are weight and cameras. At 271g it is a heavy thing to carry, and the triple 12MP rear system is solid but a clear step behind the Galaxy S flagships of the same period. Battery life from the 4,400mAh cell is respectable only if you spend most of your time on the cover screen. As an older foldable it makes most sense for buyers who want the large inner display and can live with a thick, hefty device.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3 5G worth buying?
The Galaxy Z Fold3 5G is worth buying if you genuinely want a tablet-sized screen in your pocket and will use the multitasking. It remains capable thanks to the Snapdragon 888 chip, IPX8 water resistance and S Pen support, but the 271g weight, 12MP cameras and end-of-life software support are real drawbacks. Anyone who mainly wants a good camera phone should buy a conventional flagship instead.
Does the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3 5G work with the S Pen?
Yes, the Z Fold3 5G was the first foldable to support a stylus, working with the S Pen Fold Edition and S Pen Pro. Both are designed with a retractable tip that will not damage the softer folding display, so standard Galaxy Note or tablet styluses must not be used. Neither pen is stored inside the phone.
Is the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3 5G waterproof?
The Z Fold3 5G is rated IPX8, so it withstands immersion in fresh water to 1.5 metres for 30 minutes. There is no dust rating at all, which matters for a hinged device, so keep it away from sand and grit.
How good is the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3 5G camera?
The rear system pairs a 12MP main sensor with optical stabilisation, a 12MP ultrawide and a 12MP telephoto giving 2x optical zoom, which covers most situations well in daylight but trails the Galaxy S flagships of the same year. The 4MP under-display camera inside is deliberately low quality and is best used for video calls only. For good selfies, use the 10MP cover camera or the rear cameras with the cover screen as a viewfinder.
How long does the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3 5G battery last?
The 4,400mAh dual-cell battery lasts a full day if you use the cover screen most of the time, but heavy use of the large 7.6-inch inner display drains it noticeably faster. Charging is 25W wired and 10W wireless, so a full recharge takes a little over an hour.
Should I get the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3 5G or the Galaxy Z Fold4?
The Z Fold4 is the clear upgrade on cameras, replacing the 12MP main sensor with a 50MP one and the 2x telephoto with a 3x, and it is lighter at 263g with a wider, more usable cover screen. The Z Fold3 5G matches it on battery capacity and inner screen size, so the choice comes down to whether photography and handling matter more than getting into the format for less.

Based on main-sensor size (1-inch / 1/1.3" beats 1/2.0"), telephoto reach (periscope > 5x > 3x optical), image processing tier (Apple Pro, Pixel Pro, Galaxy Ultra, Honor Magic Pro, Xiaomi Ultra), pro video features (ProRes, Apple Log, Dolby Vision), camera-partnership branding (Leica, Hasselblad, Zeiss) and OIS. Older flagships are de-rated since image processing pipelines have advanced significantly each generation. Megapixel count is deliberately downweighted — it correlates poorly with real-world camera quality.

Based on battery capacity (mAh) adjusted for platform efficiency calibrated against NotebookCheck, Tom's Guide, GSMArena and CNET reviewer tests. Apple A-series gets +45% (iOS process freezing + LTPO 1Hz + tuned panels make iPhone Pro Max outlast many 6500+ mAh Android phones in measured tests). Top Snapdragon / Dimensity flagships get +15%, budget chipsets are penalised −15% to −25% to reflect less efficient displays and looser background limits. Charging speed is excluded — see the separate Fast charging tag for that.
