About the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra
The Galaxy S20 Ultra was Samsung at its most ambitious, and it is a phone best understood as a first attempt rather than a finished one. It introduced the 108MP main sensor and the 100x Space Zoom marketing that Samsung still leans on today, but the early version of that hardware had well-documented autofocus problems at launch that took several firmware updates to settle down. What has aged well is everything around the camera: a 6.9-inch 120Hz AMOLED that is still one of the largest and brightest screens you will find on a phone this old, a 5,000mAh battery, 45W wired charging and 12GB or 16GB of RAM. It is also heavy at 220g and physically enormous, with a camera bump that stops it sitting flat. In the UK it runs the Exynos 990 chip, which was noticeably less efficient than the Snapdragon version sold elsewhere. Samsung's software support window has now closed, so it no longer receives Android upgrades or security patches, which is the main reason to think twice.

It is a hard sell as a main phone now. The screen, battery and zoom range still feel capable, but Samsung has ended both Android upgrades and security updates for the S20 series, and the UK Exynos 990 model was never the most efficient performer. Consider it only if you want a big 120Hz screen and long zoom for light use.
How good is the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra camera?
It is capable but inconsistent by modern standards. The 108MP main sensor produces detailed daylight shots and the 48MP periscope gives genuine long-range reach with 100x Space Zoom, but autofocus was unreliable at launch and only partly fixed by firmware. The 40MP front camera is still one of the highest-resolution selfie cameras Samsung has shipped.
How long does the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra get software updates?
Samsung promised three Android version upgrades and four years of security updates for the S20 series, taking it to Android 13 with One UI 5. That window has now expired, so the S20 Ultra no longer receives new Android versions or security patches. Anyone buying one should be comfortable with an unpatched device.
Does the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra have a headphone jack and microSD slot?
There is no 3.5mm headphone jack, so you will need USB-C or Bluetooth headphones. It does keep a microSD slot supporting cards up to 1TB, which is something Samsung dropped from the S21 series onwards and remains one of the S20 Ultra's practical advantages.

The Ultra is bigger in every dimension, with a 6.9-inch display against the S20+ 6.7-inch panel, a 5,000mAh battery against 4,500mAh, and 45W charging against 25W. Its camera is the bigger leap, swapping the S20+ 12MP main and 3x hybrid zoom for a 108MP main sensor and a 48MP periscope reaching 100x. The trade-off is weight, at 220g versus 186g.
Is the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra too big?
For many people, yes. At 166.9 x 76mm and 220g it is one of the largest mainstream phones Samsung has made, and the camera housing adds noticeable thickness. One-handed use is difficult and it is a tight fit in smaller pockets, so try to handle one before committing.
