About the Samsung Galaxy M55

The Galaxy M55 is a 2024 mid-ranger from Samsung's M series, and its selling point is unusual for a Samsung at this level: a Qualcomm Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 in place of an Exynos chip. SamMobile's review found it around 10-15% slower than the Exynos 1480 overall, but better supported by games, with Call of Duty allowing its Very High preset at the time. The 6.7-inch 120Hz Super AMOLED Plus screen is the other strength, and at 7.8mm and 180g it is slim for a phone with a 5,000mAh battery that lasted a full day of heavy use in the same testing. The compromises are clear. There is no IP rating, the frame and back are plastic, and the camera is the weak point: SamMobile reported a laggy camera app and night shots that take around seven seconds to capture, which often left them shaky. Its 50MP selfie camera did not noticeably beat Samsung's 32MP ones either. Samsung promised four Android upgrades and five years of security patches from its 2024 launch, so support runs into 2029, a shorter window than a current Galaxy A37 gets.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Samsung Galaxy M55 worth buying?
It is worth considering if you want a slim phone with a strong screen, good battery life and a chip that handles games well, and you mostly take photos in daylight. Keen photographers should look elsewhere, because SamMobile found the camera slow and unreliable in low light. It also has no water resistance, which the current Galaxy A37 adds with an IP68 rating.
Is the Samsung Galaxy M55 waterproof?
No. Samsung gives the Galaxy M55 no IP rating for water or dust, so treat it as unprotected against spills and submersion. If water resistance matters to you, the Galaxy A37 is rated IP68.
How long will the Samsung Galaxy M55 get software updates?
Samsung promised four generations of Android upgrades and five years of security updates. The M55 launched on Android 14 with One UI 6.1 in 2024, so that covers it up to Android 18 and security patches into 2029, and it has already been updated to Android 16.
Is the Samsung Galaxy M55 camera good?
It is good in daylight and disappointing after dark. The 50MP main camera has optical image stabilisation and records 4K video, backed by an 8MP ultrawide and a 2MP macro, but SamMobile found night mode took around seven seconds per shot, often producing shaky results. The 50MP selfie camera also shoots 4K, though in the same review it did not noticeably beat Samsung's 32MP front cameras.
Does the Samsung Galaxy M55 have 5G, a headphone jack and expandable storage?
It has 5G, including n78, the main band UK networks use for 5G, and a microSD slot for cards up to 1TB, although the card shares a tray with the second SIM. There is no 3.5mm headphone jack, and SamMobile notes there is no eSIM support.
Should I buy the Samsung Galaxy M55 or the Galaxy A37?
The Galaxy A37 is the safer long-term buy, adding IP68 water resistance, Gorilla Glass Victus+ and six Android upgrades from a 2026 Android 16 starting point, though it has no microSD slot. Both have 6.7-inch 120Hz AMOLED screens, 5,000mAh batteries and 45W charging, while the M55 is lighter at 180g against 196g and has a 50MP selfie camera to the A37's 12MP. Based on main-sensor size (1-inch / 1/1.3" beats 1/2.0"), telephoto reach (periscope > 5x > 3x optical), image processing tier (Apple Pro, Pixel Pro, Galaxy Ultra, Honor Magic Pro, Xiaomi Ultra), pro video features (ProRes, Apple Log, Dolby Vision), camera-partnership branding (Leica, Hasselblad, Zeiss) and OIS. Older flagships are de-rated since image processing pipelines have advanced significantly each generation. Megapixel count is deliberately downweighted — it correlates poorly with real-world camera quality. Where DXOMARK has lab-tested the phone, its measured score replaces this estimate.

Based on battery capacity (mAh) adjusted for platform efficiency calibrated against NotebookCheck, Tom's Guide, GSMArena and CNET reviewer tests. Apple A-series gets +45% (iOS process freezing + LTPO 1Hz + tuned panels make iPhone Pro Max outlast many 6500+ mAh Android phones in measured tests). Top Snapdragon / Dimensity flagships get +15%, budget chipsets are penalised −15% to −25% to reflect less efficient displays and looser background limits. Charging speed is excluded — see the separate Fast charging tag for that.
