About the Samsung Galaxy A71

The Galaxy A71 was Samsung's attempt to bring a flagship-feeling screen to a mid-range price, and on that count it still holds up. The 6.7-inch Super AMOLED Plus panel is bright, punchy and genuinely large, and it remains the best reason to consider one. Underneath, the Snapdragon 730 was a capable mid-range chip in 2020 and still copes with messaging, streaming and browsing, though it shows its age with heavier games and more demanding apps. The 64MP main camera takes good daylight photos, and the 4,500mAh battery with 25W charging comfortably clears a full day. Where it dates itself is the 60Hz refresh rate, which feels sluggish next to almost anything sold today, and the complete absence of a water resistance rating, so a soaking is a real risk rather than an inconvenience. Samsung's software support has now ended, meaning no further security patches. At this point it makes sense as an inexpensive large-screen phone for light use rather than a long-term purchase, and anyone wanting the same screen size with a smoother panel should weigh up the Galaxy A72 instead.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Samsung Galaxy A71 worth buying?
The Galaxy A71 is worth a look only if you want a large, bright AMOLED screen cheaply and will use the phone lightly. The Snapdragon 730 still handles everyday tasks, and the 4,500mAh battery lasts a day comfortably. Against it are the 60Hz screen, the lack of any water resistance rating, and the fact that Samsung stopped issuing security updates in 2023.
Is the Samsung Galaxy A71 waterproof?
No. The Galaxy A71 has no official IP rating at all, so it is not certified against dust or water. Rain, spills and drops into water are genuine hazards rather than something the phone is designed to shrug off. If water resistance matters, the Galaxy A72 is rated IP67.
Does the Samsung Galaxy A71 have a headphone jack?
Yes. The Galaxy A71 retains a 3.5mm headphone jack alongside its USB-C charging port, so wired earphones work without an adapter. It also has a microSD slot supporting cards up to 512GB on top of its 128GB of internal storage.
Is the Samsung Galaxy A71 camera good?
The Galaxy A71's 64MP main camera produces sharp, colourful photos in daylight and is backed by a 12MP ultrawide that is genuinely useful for landscapes and group shots. The 5MP macro and 5MP depth sensors add little. Low-light performance is the weak spot, as the main camera lacks optical stabilisation, and video tops out at 4K at 30fps.
How does the Samsung Galaxy A71 compare to the Galaxy A72?
The Galaxy A72 is the more rounded phone. It upgrades the screen to a 90Hz refresh rate, adds an IP67 water resistance rating, fits a larger 5,000mAh battery and includes a dedicated 8MP telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom plus optical stabilisation on the main sensor. The trade-off is extra bulk, at 203g against the A71's 179g.
Does the Samsung Galaxy A71 still get software updates?
No. The Galaxy A71 reached Android 13 with One UI 5.1 as its final version and Samsung's support window for it has now closed, so it no longer receives Android upgrades or security patches. Anyone using it for banking or work accounts should treat that as a meaningful risk and consider a phone still within its support window.

Based on main-sensor size (1-inch / 1/1.3" beats 1/2.0"), telephoto reach (periscope > 5x > 3x optical), image processing tier (Apple Pro, Pixel Pro, Galaxy Ultra, Honor Magic Pro, Xiaomi Ultra), pro video features (ProRes, Apple Log, Dolby Vision), camera-partnership branding (Leica, Hasselblad, Zeiss) and OIS. Older flagships are de-rated since image processing pipelines have advanced significantly each generation. Megapixel count is deliberately downweighted — it correlates poorly with real-world camera quality.

Based on battery capacity (mAh) adjusted for platform efficiency calibrated against NotebookCheck, Tom's Guide, GSMArena and CNET reviewer tests. Apple A-series gets +45% (iOS process freezing + LTPO 1Hz + tuned panels make iPhone Pro Max outlast many 6500+ mAh Android phones in measured tests). Top Snapdragon / Dimensity flagships get +15%, budget chipsets are penalised −15% to −25% to reflect less efficient displays and looser background limits. Charging speed is excluded — see the separate Fast charging tag for that.
