About the Samsung Galaxy A30s

The Galaxy A30s was Samsung playing the numbers game at the budget end, and for a while it worked. It pairs a large 6.4-inch Super AMOLED screen with a 4,000mAh battery and a triple rear camera, then adds an under-display fingerprint reader that was rare at this level in 2019. The catch is resolution: that big panel is only HD+, so text and fine detail look noticeably softer than on the Full HD+ A-series models above it. The Exynos 7904 chip was built for efficiency rather than speed, which helps the battery comfortably last a day but makes heavy apps and multitasking feel sluggish today. Cameras are respectable in daylight thanks to the 25MP main sensor and a genuinely useful ultra-wide, but low light is where the budget shows. Software support finished on Android 11, and it is a 4G-only handset. For UK buyers it makes most sense as a straightforward big-screen, long-battery phone for calls, messaging and video rather than anything demanding.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Samsung Galaxy A30s worth buying?
It is a reasonable choice if battery life and screen size matter more than speed. The 4,000mAh battery and 6.4-inch AMOLED panel are the strong points, but the HD+ resolution looks soft, the Exynos 7904 chip is slow by modern standards and software support has ended on Android 11.
Does the Samsung Galaxy A30s have a headphone jack and microSD slot?
Yes. The Galaxy A30s keeps the 3.5mm headphone jack and has a microSD slot alongside its 32GB, 64GB or 128GB of built-in storage. NFC is also included for contactless payments.
Does the Samsung Galaxy A30s support 5G?
No. The Galaxy A30s is 4G LTE only. It works normally on every UK network, but you will not get 5G speeds.
How long does the Samsung Galaxy A30s battery last?
The 4,000mAh battery paired with an efficient 14nm chip and an HD+ screen was comfortably a full-day phone when new, and often stretched further with light use. Bear in mind that any handset from 2019 will have lost a meaningful share of its original capacity.
How good is the Samsung Galaxy A30s camera?
Fine in daylight, limited after dark. The 25MP main sensor captures bright, punchy shots outdoors and the 8MP ultra-wide adds useful flexibility, but there is no optical stabilisation and indoor or night photos come out soft and noisy.
How does the Samsung Galaxy A30s compare to the Galaxy A40?
They share the same Exynos 7904 chip, so performance is broadly similar. The A30s gives you a much bigger screen, a larger 4,000mAh battery and a third rear camera, while the A40 has a sharper Full HD+ display in a far smaller and lighter body.

Based on main-sensor size (1-inch / 1/1.3" beats 1/2.0"), telephoto reach (periscope > 5x > 3x optical), image processing tier (Apple Pro, Pixel Pro, Galaxy Ultra, Honor Magic Pro, Xiaomi Ultra), pro video features (ProRes, Apple Log, Dolby Vision), camera-partnership branding (Leica, Hasselblad, Zeiss) and OIS. Older flagships are de-rated since image processing pipelines have advanced significantly each generation. Megapixel count is deliberately downweighted — it correlates poorly with real-world camera quality.

Based on battery capacity (mAh) adjusted for platform efficiency calibrated against NotebookCheck, Tom's Guide, GSMArena and CNET reviewer tests. Apple A-series gets +45% (iOS process freezing + LTPO 1Hz + tuned panels make iPhone Pro Max outlast many 6500+ mAh Android phones in measured tests). Top Snapdragon / Dimensity flagships get +15%, budget chipsets are penalised −15% to −25% to reflect less efficient displays and looser background limits. Charging speed is excluded — see the separate Fast charging tag for that.
