About the Samsung Galaxy A21s

The Galaxy A21s was Samsung's 2020 budget pick, aimed squarely at people who wanted a big screen and a battery that would not give up by teatime. The 5,000mAh cell delivers on that promise, and the Exynos 850 is efficient enough to stretch it across two days of undemanding use. Beyond endurance, though, it is a phone built on compromises. The 6.5-inch screen is only HD+, so text and video look noticeably softer than on Samsung's mid-range AMOLED models, and the 48MP main camera produces usable daylight photos but falls apart quickly indoors. Four rear lenses sounds generous, but the 2MP macro and depth sensors add almost nothing. It does keep a headphone jack, a microSD slot and a rear-mounted fingerprint reader, all things newer phones have quietly dropped. The important caveat is software: Samsung stopped issuing security updates for the A21s in July 2024, so it is no longer being patched. That makes it hard to recommend as a main phone today, though it still functions perfectly well as a spare, a child's first handset or a device kept purely for calls and messaging.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Samsung Galaxy A21s worth buying?
The Galaxy A21s is hard to recommend as a main phone now that Samsung ended its security updates in July 2024. Its 5,000mAh battery, headphone jack and microSD slot remain genuinely useful, so it still has a role as a cheap spare or a first phone for a child. For anything involving banking or work accounts, choose a phone that is still being patched.
How long does the Samsung Galaxy A21s battery last?
The Galaxy A21s pairs a 5,000mAh battery with the efficient 8nm Exynos 850 and a low-resolution HD+ screen, which is a combination that favours endurance. Light users can realistically get close to two days between charges. Charging is 15W, so refilling it takes a couple of hours.
Does the Samsung Galaxy A21s have a headphone jack and microSD slot?
Yes to both. The Galaxy A21s has a 3.5mm headphone jack for wired earphones and a microSD slot that accepts cards up to 512GB. That expansion is worth using, since the entry-level configurations ship with just 32GB of internal storage.
Is the Samsung Galaxy A21s camera good?
The Galaxy A21s takes reasonable photos outdoors with its 48MP main camera, but image quality drops off sharply in low light. The 8MP ultrawide is handy for group shots and scenery, while the 2MP macro and depth sensors are largely there to pad the specification. Video is limited to 1080p at 30fps.
How does the Samsung Galaxy A21s compare to the Galaxy A12?
The two are closely matched budget phones with the same 6.5-inch HD+ screen size, 5,000mAh battery and 15W charging. The A21s has the better selfie camera at 13MP against 8MP and uses Samsung's efficient Exynos 850, while the A12 moves the fingerprint reader to the side-mounted power button and supports larger microSD cards. Neither is still receiving security updates.
Does the Samsung Galaxy A21s support 5G?
No. The Galaxy A21s is a 4G-only phone, so it connects to LTE networks rather than 5G. In practice that is rarely a limitation for messaging, streaming and browsing on UK networks, but it does mean the phone cannot take advantage of the faster speeds a 5G plan offers.

Based on main-sensor size (1-inch / 1/1.3" beats 1/2.0"), telephoto reach (periscope > 5x > 3x optical), image processing tier (Apple Pro, Pixel Pro, Galaxy Ultra, Honor Magic Pro, Xiaomi Ultra), pro video features (ProRes, Apple Log, Dolby Vision), camera-partnership branding (Leica, Hasselblad, Zeiss) and OIS. Older flagships are de-rated since image processing pipelines have advanced significantly each generation. Megapixel count is deliberately downweighted — it correlates poorly with real-world camera quality.

Based on battery capacity (mAh) adjusted for platform efficiency calibrated against NotebookCheck, Tom's Guide, GSMArena and CNET reviewer tests. Apple A-series gets +45% (iOS process freezing + LTPO 1Hz + tuned panels make iPhone Pro Max outlast many 6500+ mAh Android phones in measured tests). Top Snapdragon / Dimensity flagships get +15%, budget chipsets are penalised −15% to −25% to reflect less efficient displays and looser background limits. Charging speed is excluded — see the separate Fast charging tag for that.
