About the Realme 8

The realme 8 was built around one clear idea: put a proper Super AMOLED screen on a phone that most rivals were still fitting with LCD. Years on, that decision is still what makes it appealing second hand. Blacks are genuinely black, the in-display fingerprint reader works because of that panel, and at 177g with a body just under 8mm thick it is far more comfortable to hold than the chunky 5,000mAh phones it competed with. The trade-off realme made to get there was refresh rate: the screen runs at 60Hz, so scrolling looks less fluid than on cheaper handsets with 90Hz LCDs. The other significant limitation is connectivity. This is a 4G-only phone, so it cannot use UK 5G networks at all, which matters more now than it did at launch. Performance from the Helio G95 is fine for messaging, video and casual games but shows its age under pressure, and realme has stopped issuing updates. Its strengths are the screen, the light build and the 5,000mAh battery.

Frequently asked questions

Is the realme 8 worth buying?
The realme 8 is worth a look only as a second-hand buy for light users who want an AMOLED screen and long battery life. Two things count against it: it has no 5G, and it no longer receives software or security updates. Anyone who wants 5G or ongoing support should look at a newer budget phone instead.
Does the realme 8 support 5G?
No, the realme 8 is a 4G LTE phone only. Its MediaTek Helio G95 chipset has no 5G modem, so it will connect to UK 4G networks but never to 5G. The separate realme 8 5G was a different handset with different hardware.
Does the realme 8 have a headphone jack and memory card slot?
Yes to both. The realme 8 keeps a 3.5mm headphone jack for wired earphones and has a dedicated microSD slot, so you can expand the 64GB or 128GB of built-in storage without giving up a SIM slot. That combination is increasingly rare on newer phones.
How good is the realme 8 camera?
The 64MP main camera produces detailed, punchy daylight shots that are good for the money, but there is no optical stabilisation so night mode and handheld video are shaky. The supporting 8MP ultrawide is noticeably softer, and the 2MP macro and depth sensors add little of value. Treat it as a capable daylight camera rather than an all-rounder.
How long will the realme 8 receive updates?
It no longer receives them. The realme 8 launched on realme UI 2.0 based on Android 11 and was carried forward to Android 13, but its update window has since closed. That means no new Android versions and no further security patches, which is worth weighing up if you use the phone for banking.
How does the realme 8 compare to the realme 9 Pro+?
The realme 9 Pro+ is a clear step up in the areas that age worst: it adds 5G, a 90Hz AMOLED panel rather than 60Hz, and a 50MP Sony IMX766 main camera with optical stabilisation that transforms low-light and video results. The realme 8 hits back with a larger 5,000mAh battery and a microSD slot the 9 Pro+ drops. Compare realme 9 Pro+ deals.
