About the Oppo A74

The Oppo A74 made an unusual choice for a budget phone: it spent the money on the screen and the battery rather than the processor. You get a 6.43-inch AMOLED panel with proper blacks and good contrast, which is a noticeable step up from the LCDs fitted to most rivals at this level, plus a 5,000mAh battery and 33W SuperVOOC charging that refills it far faster than budget phones usually manage. The compromise is the Snapdragon 662, a 4G-only chip that handles messaging, browsing and video comfortably but stumbles in demanding games, and a 60Hz refresh rate that feels dated next to the 90Hz panels of its 5G-equipped stablemates. The 48MP main camera is fine in daylight, the 2MP macro and depth sensors contribute little, and video recording is capped at 1080p. Practical touches survive: there is a headphone jack and a microSD slot alongside the 128GB of storage. Software support has run out. It remains a sensible cheap phone for someone who values screen quality and battery life over speed and does not need 5G.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Oppo A74 worth buying?
It is a decent budget choice if you want an AMOLED screen and long battery life cheaply. The Snapdragon 662 is slow for gaming, the phone is 4G only, and official software support has ended, so treat it as a low-cost everyday handset rather than a long-term purchase.
Does the Oppo A74 support 5G?
No. The standard Oppo A74 uses a Snapdragon 662 and connects over 4G LTE only. Oppo sold a separate A74 5G model with a Snapdragon 480 chip if 5G matters to you.
How long does the Oppo A74 battery last?
The 5,000mAh battery routinely lasts well beyond a day of normal use, helped by the power-efficient chip and the 60Hz AMOLED display. It charges at 33W using Oppo's SuperVOOC 2.0, reaching a little over half charge in around 30 minutes.
Does the Oppo A74 have expandable storage and a headphone jack?
Yes to both. There is a microSD slot supporting cards up to 256GB alongside the 128GB of built-in storage, and a 3.5mm headphone jack for wired earbuds.
Is the Oppo A74 camera good?
The 48MP main camera takes acceptable photos in daylight but struggles in low light. The 2MP macro and 2MP depth sensors add very little, and video is limited to 1080p, so there is no 4K recording option.
Should I get the Oppo A74 or the Oppo A54 5G?
The A74 has the better screen, an AMOLED panel rather than the A54 5G's LCD, and much faster 33W charging. The A54 5G answers with 5G connectivity and a 90Hz refresh rate, though it charges at only 18W and is heavier. Pick the A74 for screen and charging, the A54 5G for future-proof connectivity. Based on main-sensor size (1-inch / 1/1.3" beats 1/2.0"), telephoto reach (periscope > 5x > 3x optical), image processing tier (Apple Pro, Pixel Pro, Galaxy Ultra, Honor Magic Pro, Xiaomi Ultra), pro video features (ProRes, Apple Log, Dolby Vision), camera-partnership branding (Leica, Hasselblad, Zeiss) and OIS. Older flagships are de-rated since image processing pipelines have advanced significantly each generation. Megapixel count is deliberately downweighted — it correlates poorly with real-world camera quality.

Based on battery capacity (mAh) adjusted for platform efficiency calibrated against NotebookCheck, Tom's Guide, GSMArena and CNET reviewer tests. Apple A-series gets +45% (iOS process freezing + LTPO 1Hz + tuned panels make iPhone Pro Max outlast many 6500+ mAh Android phones in measured tests). Top Snapdragon / Dimensity flagships get +15%, budget chipsets are penalised −15% to −25% to reflect less efficient displays and looser background limits. Charging speed is excluded — see the separate Fast charging tag for that.
