About the Motorola Razr 2022

The Razr 2022 was the point at which Motorola stopped selling its folding clamshell on nostalgia alone and put proper flagship hardware inside it. Where the first two Razr revivals ran mid-range chips and small batteries, this one carries a Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1, a 6.7-inch 144Hz pOLED that fills the whole front when opened, and a 50MP main camera paired with a 13MP ultrawide. Closed, it is small enough to disappear into a jacket pocket, which is the entire appeal of the format. Where it shows its age is the 2.7-inch external display, which handles notifications and glances but is nowhere near the small second screen later Razrs adopted, and the 3,500mAh battery, which is respectable for a folding phone but modest by ordinary standards. There is no wireless charging and the IP52 rating covers splashes rather than immersion. For UK buyers it is worth considering as a compact flagship that happens to fold, provided you accept that a 2022 handset is at the end of its software life.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Motorola Razr 2022 worth buying?
It is worth considering if you want a genuinely pocketable phone with flagship performance and are relaxed about long-term software support. The Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 and 144Hz screen still feel quick, but as a 2022 release it is past its window for new Android versions. The small 2.7-inch external display is the main functional limitation compared with newer folding clamshells.
Is the Motorola Razr 2022 waterproof?
No. It carries an IP52 rating, which covers dust ingress and light splashes or rain but not submersion. Do not take it near a bath, a pool or the sea.
Does the Motorola Razr 2022 have wireless charging?
No. Charging is wired only, over USB-C, using Motorola's 30W TurboPower. There is also no 3.5mm headphone jack and no microSD slot, so buy the storage capacity you need up front.
How good is the Motorola Razr 2022 camera?
The 50MP main camera with optical stabilisation is a substantial improvement on the single sensor in the Razr 5G, and the 13MP ultrawide adds a second useful focal length that earlier Razrs did not have. There is a 32MP camera inside for video calls, and because the phone folds you can prop it open on a table and shoot hands-free.
How big is the outer screen on the Motorola Razr 2022?
The external display measures 2.7 inches at 800 x 573 pixels. It is designed for notifications, controls and quick glances rather than running full apps, which is the clearest difference between this Razr and the models Motorola released from 2023 onwards.
Should I get the Motorola Razr 2022 or the Razr 40 Ultra?
The Razr 40 Ultra's headline change is its 3.6-inch external display, which covers the entire front panel and runs proper apps rather than just notifications. It is also lighter at 188.5g, adds 5W wireless charging and carries a slightly larger 3,800mAh battery. The Razr 2022 fights back with a higher-resolution 50MP main camera against the 40 Ultra's 12MP sensor, and both use the same Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1.
