About the Google Pixel 4

The Pixel 4 is the most interesting phone Google ever made and one of the least practical. It introduced a 90Hz display to the Pixel line, added a second rear camera for the first time, and built in a radar chip that let you skip tracks or silence alarms with a wave of the hand. Face unlock replaced the fingerprint reader entirely and remains among the quickest secure unlock systems ever fitted to an Android phone. The camera is the part that still holds up: dual exposure sliders in the viewfinder gave you highlight and shadow control before you pressed the shutter, and astrophotography mode produced night-sky shots that phones twice its price could not match. What sank it was battery life. The 2,800mAh cell is small even by 2019 standards, and pairing it with a 90Hz screen meant most people needed a top-up before evening. There is no headphone jack and no microSD slot, and Google's software support ran out in 2022, so anything bought now will not receive further security patches.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Google Pixel 4 worth buying?
Only as a cheap secondary or spare phone. The camera and 90Hz screen still feel good, but the 2,800mAh battery was weak at launch and will have degraded further, and Google stopped issuing security updates for it in 2022. Anyone wanting a Pixel as a daily phone should start at the Pixel 6a or newer.
How long does the Google Pixel 4 battery last?
Not long enough, and this was the phone's main criticism at launch. The 2,800mAh cell is small for a phone driving a 90Hz display, and most reviewers found it needed charging before the end of a normal day. The Pixel 4 XL's 3,700mAh battery is noticeably better if endurance matters.
Does the Google Pixel 4 have a fingerprint sensor?
No. Google removed the fingerprint reader entirely and replaced it with an infrared face unlock system that uses a dot projector, similar in approach to Apple's Face ID. It is fast and secure, but there is no fingerprint fallback if face unlock fails or you are wearing a mask.
Is the Google Pixel 4 camera good?
It is still capable for its age. The 12.2MP main and 16MP telephoto pair gives real 2x-range optical zoom, and the astrophotography mode in Night Sight produces night-sky results that few phones of the era could match. Dual exposure sliders let you set highlights and shadows before taking the shot, which is genuinely useful in tricky light.
How does the Google Pixel 4 compare to the Pixel 4 XL?
They share the same Snapdragon 855 chip, 6GB of RAM, dual rear camera and Motion Sense radar, so photos and performance are identical. The XL is the better buy on the two things that separate them: a 6.3-inch QHD+ screen rather than 5.7-inch Full HD+, and a 3,700mAh battery rather than 2,800mAh. Choose the smaller Pixel 4 only if one-handed use matters more to you than endurance.
Does the Google Pixel 4 still get software updates?
No. Google's guaranteed update window for the Pixel 4 ended in October 2022, with Android 13 the final major version. It no longer receives security patches, which is the strongest argument against using one as your main phone.
