About the Apple iPhone XS

The Apple iPhone XS launched in September 2018 as the direct successor to the iPhone X, refining rather than reinventing Apple's first Face ID design. Its 5.8-inch Super AMOLED display was one of the best screens on any phone at the time, and the stainless steel frame with glass front and back gave it a premium feel that has aged well. The dual 12MP camera system added smarter Smart HDR processing for better dynamic range, and the A12 Bionic chip was the first 7nm chip in any smartphone, giving it noticeably snappier performance than its predecessor. IP68 water resistance meant it could survive deeper submersion than most rivals of the era. Nearly eight years later, the reality is that Apple has moved the iPhone XS onto security-only updates after iOS 18, so it no longer receives new features and its app compatibility will keep narrowing. It remains a solid, well-built phone for very light use or as a backup handset, but it is not a sensible choice as anyone's only phone in 2026.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Apple iPhone XS worth buying in 2026?
Only as a cheap secondary phone or backup device. The iPhone XS is capped at iOS 18 and no longer gets feature updates, so newer apps will progressively stop supporting it. It still works well for calls, texts and basic browsing, but it should not be anyone's main phone today.
Does the Apple iPhone XS support 5G?
No, the iPhone XS only supports 4G LTE connectivity. Apple introduced 5G support with the iPhone 12 in 2020, two years after the iPhone XS launched.
How long will the Apple iPhone XS receive software updates?
The iPhone XS's last major software version is iOS 18, and it was excluded from iOS 26 when that launched in 2025. Apple is still issuing occasional security-only patches on iOS 18, but no further feature updates are planned.
Is the Apple iPhone XS camera any good?
The dual 12MP wide and telephoto camera system was excellent for 2018 and still produces pleasant photos in daylight, with 2x optical zoom and Smart HDR for better highlight and shadow detail. Low-light performance is noticeably behind modern iPhones, which benefit from years of computational photography improvements Apple has not backported.
How does the Apple iPhone XS compare to the iPhone X?
The iPhone XS kept a near-identical design to the iPhone X but added the faster A12 Bionic chip, improved Smart HDR camera processing, a brighter and more colour-accurate display, and dual-SIM support in some markets. Storage also increased to a 512GB option, double the iPhone X's maximum.
Should I get the Apple iPhone XS or the iPhone XS Max?
Both share the same A12 Bionic chip, camera system and software support, so the choice comes down to size. The XS Max has a larger 6.5-inch display and a bigger 3,179 mAh battery for longer life between charges, while the standard XS is smaller, lighter at 177g, and easier to use one-handed.
