About the Apple iPhone 8 Plus

The iPhone 8 Plus was Apple's last large-screen, Home-button iPhone before the notch and Face ID took over with the iPhone X later in 2017, and it paired that familiar design with a dual camera and the fastest chip Apple had shipped at the time, the A11 Bionic. It was also the first Plus-sized iPhone with wireless charging, thanks to its glass back. Coming up on a decade old in 2026, it is now firmly a legacy device: Apple capped software updates at iOS 16, there is no 5G, and the thick top-and-bottom bezels look distinctly old-fashioned. Where it still earns a place is as an affordable refurbished handset for buyers who specifically want Touch ID and a physical Home button rather than Face ID, or who want the biggest, most usable screen from that generation without the higher price of an iPhone X. On the UK market it appears almost entirely as used or refurbished stock, so check battery health carefully before buying, since original batteries this old rarely still perform to spec.

Frequently asked questions

Is the iPhone 8 Plus worth buying in 2026?
Only as an inexpensive secondary phone or an easy first smartphone, and only refurbished with a confirmed battery health rating. It cannot run iOS 17 or later, and Apple's iOS 16 security support is expected to end around September 2026.
Does the iPhone 8 Plus support 5G?
No. The iPhone 8 Plus is 4G LTE only, since 5G networks did not exist when it launched in 2017. Apple's first 5G iPhone was the iPhone 12 in 2020.
Does the iPhone 8 Plus have wireless charging?
Yes. It was the first Plus-sized iPhone with Qi wireless charging, made possible by its glass rear panel. It also supports fast wired charging with a compatible USB-C power adapter.
What is the latest iOS version the iPhone 8 Plus can run?
The iPhone 8 Plus is capped at iOS 16.7.x. The A11 Bionic chip inside it is not supported by iOS 17 or any later version, so no further major software updates will follow.
Is the iPhone 8 Plus camera still good?
The dual 12MP wide and telephoto cameras with 2x optical zoom and Portrait mode were among the best available in 2017 and still take respectable daylight photos today. Low-light performance and video quality trail well behind any recent iPhone, which has no night mode or advanced computational photography.
Should I get the iPhone 8 Plus or the iPhone 8?
The iPhone 8 Plus adds a second telephoto camera lens with 2x optical zoom and Portrait mode, a larger 5.5-inch display, and a bigger 2,691mAh battery, but is noticeably larger and heavier than the standard iPhone 8. Choose the Plus if screen size, battery life, and camera versatility matter more than pocketability. Compare iPhone 8 deals.

Based on main-sensor size (1-inch / 1/1.3" beats 1/2.0"), telephoto reach (periscope > 5x > 3x optical), image processing tier (Apple Pro, Pixel Pro, Galaxy Ultra, Honor Magic Pro, Xiaomi Ultra), pro video features (ProRes, Apple Log, Dolby Vision), camera-partnership branding (Leica, Hasselblad, Zeiss) and OIS. Older flagships are de-rated since image processing pipelines have advanced significantly each generation. Megapixel count is deliberately downweighted — it correlates poorly with real-world camera quality.

Based on battery capacity (mAh) adjusted for platform efficiency calibrated against NotebookCheck, Tom's Guide, GSMArena and CNET reviewer tests. Apple A-series gets +45% (iOS process freezing + LTPO 1Hz + tuned panels make iPhone Pro Max outlast many 6500+ mAh Android phones in measured tests). Top Snapdragon / Dimensity flagships get +15%, budget chipsets are penalised −15% to −25% to reflect less efficient displays and looser background limits. Charging speed is excluded — see the separate Fast charging tag for that.
